There are two possible causes to this problem.
1. The drive has failed.
2. You need to reinstall the drivers.
Check Device Manager in Control Panel to see if the drive is listed. You would have a hardware failure if the drive is missing. Restart the PC. Then check Device Manager again.
Look at this HP Site for more troubleshooting tips. This document explains how to check the BIOS for drive detection and reinstall the drivers if the drive is detected in Device Manager.
Also remove the case side panel. reseat the DVD drive SATA (data and power cables). Then check the BIOS or Device Manager to see if the drive is detected.
Replace the drive.
