I purchased this laptop because they told me it plays blu ray disc I can not get it to play blu ray only dvds was I given false information?

Yes, you were given incorrect information.
I would have to say that the term SuperMulti DVD Burner is a fancy name for what we all know as a DVD-RW drive.
In order to play blue ray disks, you need a blue ray disk drive. That will be so designated, and it will also play DVD's and CD's as well.

Unfortunately, it is not.
I think HP should change the description to what it used to be called...a plain old DVD burner.
I'm not sure what the supermulti part does, but it is definitely not a blue ray drive.
Very few HP notebooks come with BR drives. They normally have to be special ordered.
