Hello, so I have been trying to replace the two 4gb ram sticks with two 8gb ram sticks, because I have seen online that it's possible to upgrade to this. It will not work no matter what I do and there is just a black screen when I turn it on. I am wondering if my specific HP Envy 360 model will not upgrade to 16GB total RAM? Thanks

Hi:

Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates the notebook will support 2 x 8 GB of memory.

Maintenance and Service Guide

It should support up to 2 x 16 GB of memory, so it probably comes down to the memory you installed.

It is probably not compatible with your PC.

Can you post the memory brand and specification you installed?

DDR4-3200 memory has to be CL22 for almost all HP consumer class notebooks including yours.

Thanks for the quick response, so I got two 8GB Crucial DDR4-3200's and yes I think it definitely is just not compatible. So what Crucial RAM do you recommend for my specific PC?

You're very welcome.

That's exactly the memory I would have recommended.

I have heard that Crucial makes the DDR4-3200 memory with different ranks/density such as 2R x8, 1Rx8 and 1Rx16 all under the same part number.

Does the label on the Crucial memory indicate how the ranks are configured?

2Rx8 is usually the most compatible memory, but not always, and I have learned from other posts that the 1Rx16 memory has the most problems.

Let me know and I'll see what other options you may have.

So the label on the Crucial RAM says it's SODIMM 1.2V CL22 I do not see a rank number or anything like that anywhere on the label? The long name is CT8G4SFRA32A.C8FN

This is all the info I could find on that number:

Crucial - CT8G4SFRA32A.C8FN 8GB 260pin SO-DIMM DDR4 - Memory Module

I have no idea what (1Gx64) means but if it is the density, it is too high.

The only suggestion I can offer would be to see if this memory works:

Timetec DDR4 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 3200MHz PC4-21300 Non-ECC Unbuffered 1.2V CL22 1Rx8 Single-Rank 260 Pi...

Ok, so are you confident this will work with my HP Envy? I will have to return my RAM on Amazon and see if this one works, also are you definitely sure my specific model can handle more than 8GB RAM?

Yes, that is how all of the Crucial DDR4-3200 memory is advertised.

Theoretically, it should have worked.  But as I wrote earlier, the CL speed and rank of the memory is important.

The DDR4-3200 was right, the CL22 was right, so the only other thing it can be is the number of ranks.

While I can't 100% guarantee the Timetek memory will work, I have a high degree of confidence that it should.

Chapter 5 of the manual does not indicate that a BIOS update is required before upgrading the memory.

As far as the notebook supporting 2 x 8 GB of memory, I believe that it does based on what the manual indicates, and not only that, I believe that the notebook you have in front of you can support 32 GB of memory.

You can run this command to confirm how much memory your notebook can support:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

So I've just done the process you've said and it said I have more than 67GB RAM?! I was not expecting that however I am wondering if I should try two 32 GB RAM now or would that overload it completely, because not even the 8GB RAM sticks worked? I am considering getting the RAM you recommended however if it is possible to upgrade it much further I will do it, however I have not seen it done before on my laptop?
