Hello HP Community,

I’m using an HP Pavilion x360 Convertible (Model: 14-dy0003nia) running Windows 11, version 24H2.

My touchpad randomly stops working — especially after restarting or waking the laptop from sleep. In Device Manager, it shows “ELAN Input Device” but often says “hardware not connected to the computer”. I’ve tried:

  • Reinstalling and updating the ELAN driver from HP’s website
  • Performing a hard reset
  • Disabling fast startup
  • BIOS check (no advanced or system configuration option)
  • Uninstalling the HID-compliant mouse and restarting
  • Confirmed that the latest Windows updates are installed

After lots of effort, the touchpad works again temporarily — but after shutting down or restarting, it stops working again and shows the same error. It’s frustrating having to troubleshoot it every time I turn my laptop on.

Please, is there a permanent fix for this? Or is it likely a hardware issue that needs service?

Thank you in advance.

Try these steps:

Update Touchpad Driver:

Check Device Manager:

  • If your touchpad appears with an error, right-click and choose "Update driver."
  • Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software."

Reinstall Touchpad Driver:

  • Right-click the touchpad device in Device Manager and select "Uninstall device."
  • Restart your laptop to let Windows automatically reinstall the driver.

BIOS Update:

  • Ensure your BIOS is up-to-date, as BIOS updates can resolve hardware compatibility issues.
  • Check for BIOS updates in the HP Support Assistant or manually on the HP website.

Windows Updates:

  • Make sure your Windows 11 installation is up-to-date. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

Hardware Reset:

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and turn on your laptop.

Check Touchpad Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad and ensure the touchpad is enabled.

HP Support Assistant:

I hope this helps.
