My touchpad is not working properly. The right and left clicks work fine, but the cursor is laggy most of the time and not responsive the rest of the time. Resetting or installing the driver doesn't fix the problem

Hi @Ishlakous
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for explaining the issue so clearly—and I’m really sorry the touchpad is acting up like this. Since the clicks are working but the cursor is laggy or unresponsive, it’s likely tied to either firmware-level conflicts, power management settings, or deeper driver inconsistencies.
You can follow these troubleshooting steps to potentially resolve the issue:
Check Touchpad Settings:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad.
- Ensure that the touchpad sensitivity settings are correctly adjusted.
- Verify that the touchpad is enabled.
Update BIOS and Drivers:
- Ensure that the latest BIOS version is installed.
- Download and install the latest drivers from the HP Support website. This includes chipset drivers, which can directly impact touchpad performance.
Reseat the Touchpad Cable:
- If the touchpad cable is not properly connected, it can cause intermittent issues.
- Power off the laptop, disconnect the battery if possible, and remove the touchpad cable. Reconnect it securely and restart the laptop.
Check for Background Processes:
- High system resource usage can cause the touchpad to be unresponsive.
- Open Task Manager and check for any processes that are consuming excessive resources.
- Close any unnecessary applications.
Boot into Safe Mode:
- Boot your computer into Safe Mode to determine if the issue persists. If the touchpad works fine in Safe Mode, this suggests a software conflict which you can identify by systematically disabling startup programs and services.
Clean the Touchpad:
- Dust and dirt on the touchpad surface can affect its sensitivity.
- Clean the touchpad gently with a soft, dry cloth.
Here's a detailed guide on the steps mentioned above:
Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the computer.
- Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.
- Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.
- Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds to drain residual power.
- Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the computer, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.
- Press the power button to turn on the computer.
- If a startup menu appears, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, and then press the Enter key.
- After reconnecting each of the peripheral devices, run Windows Update and HP Support Assistant to update all device drivers.
Verify Latest BIOS and Drivers
- Visit the HP Support website HP Support.
- Enter your computer model and locate the latest BIOS and drivers available.
- Download and install all the necessary updates.
Reseat Touchpad Cable
- Disconnect power and battery.
- Locate the touchpad cable and disconnect it.
- Reconnect the cable securely and reassemble the laptop.
- Restart your computer.
Test External Devices and Windows Safe Mode
- Connect an external mouse to test if the lag persists.
- Boot into Safe Mode: Reboot the computer, and during startup, press F8 or access Advanced Startup from Windows settings, then choose Safe Mode.
