I have an old HP Pavilion p7-1027c, and I wanted to upgrade the processor. It came with the i3-2100, and I want to install an i7-2600K. I put the new processor in and got the message "unsupported cpu installed." It should be compatible, as these two processors both require the same motherboard socket (LGA1155).
Is there a BIOS update I can install to make this cpu work with my system, or am I out of luck? If so, where can I find the update?

You're very welcome.
There isn't any way that I know of to check the BIOS for a whitelist of processors.
Looks like other forum members are having issues with upgrading the processors in that motherboard:

This person who replied to this post indicates that the 'K' processors are not supported unless listed as such by HP in the motherboard specs.
The person installed an i7-2600 which he reported worked fine.

The link below has the last BIOS update HP released for your PC.
HP Pavilion p7-1027c Desktop PC Software and Driver Details
It was written to be run on W7, so if you are using W10, I don't know what the results will be if you attempt to update the BIOS in W10.
This benchmarking website doesn't show anyone that installed the i7-2600K in their PC's.

This post I found indicates the processor should work in that motherboard.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure I already completed that BIOS update before I moved to Windows 10. It's interesting that someone else supposedly has the 2600K in that motherboard. I assume it's an issue with whitelisting, which the BIOS update may not have removed. Do you happen to know how I can check the whitelist on any given device? I looked in the BIOS and couldn't fine it.

Very interesting. I ordered a cheap i5 2400 to see if I have any more luck with it than that other person did. If not, I'm only out like $7 so whatever. Thanks for digging around for me. I couldn't even find what my motherboard model actually was, so that's useful information to have. Everywhere I looked it just gave me the computer model as the motherboard, and I couldn't find anything else on the mb itself.

Anytime.
Glad to have been of assistance.
Yeah, for $7 it is definitely worth the low risk.
Maybe the other person's processor he bought was DOA.
I'm surprised the i7-2600 is going for more than $25.00.
This is the lowest listing I could find other than those that were being offered as a bid sale.

The i5-2400 is a good intermediate performing processor.
