HP ENVY H8-1417C
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,  I have a HP ENVY h8-1417c  desktop computer that currently has a NVDIA GeForce GT 630 graphics card.

It does not seem to be a very efficient card for playing video games.

I would like to upgrade to a more powerful graphic card that would be compatable with my system.

I would appeciate suggestions

Thank you

Hank

Hello

You are welcome.

Yes.

Most new Nvidia and AMD graphics cards will work with X16 Gen 2 PCIe slots also. I have GTX 1060 running in an HP PC with Gen 2.0 slot and it works very good.

You have no worries with this issue.

Hello

You have EFI BIOS and a 460 watt power supply so upgrade options good.

You must disable secure boot and enable legacy boot in BIOS before swapping in new card and should uninstall current graphics drivers.

Nvidia cards are a better fit with HP systems due to lower power draw and length of card. EVGA makes a dual slot GTX 1060 single fan card that is about 7 inches long and needs a minimum 400 watt power supply. It also needs a 6 pin PCIe connector for power. The EVGA SC with copper heatpipe version gets better reviews than the base single fan one.

Thanks for the information on this.    One last question.   My ENVY specs mention that I have one PCI Express x16 (Gen 3.0 for i5 and i7)    I have the i7.

The card you mentioned says that I need a
PCI Express 3.0 slot to run this card.

Is the PCI Express X16 (Gen 3.0) mentioned above the same thing as a PCI express 3.0 slot needed for installation.

Hi

You need bios version above 8

if you have orginal psu it is maybe without 6 pin PCIe power connector so check it.  If not then you need new psu.

Many gtx 1060 card needs  6pin PCIe power connector but gtx 1080 need 8pin PCIe power connector.  So check also this

Before installation remove old card drivers and disable secure boot in bios.

This is so helpful and the only place where I was able to find an answer!

Just to confirm the stock power supply @460w will have plenty of power to support gtx1060?

After I uninstall the drivers for the older graphic card and put the gtx 1060 in and boot up a computer, will it prompt driver installation for the new card or will I have to download the new drivers manually?

Also, do you think that this desktop can handle more powerful graphic cards like gtx 1070 or maybe even higher?

In other words how high would you go?

Thanks again!

Stock psu has just enough power and what it is quality🤔

Check also yours stock psu power connector. 1060 needs maybe 6pin PCIe connector

You must remove old card drivers and disable secure boot in bios before installation.

I just member that I installed this almost immediately. https://www.geforce.com/geforce-experience/download
