HP Z640
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I am unclear on the description in the documentation of the internal USB connector on a z640 (#3 on the diagram on the inside of the PC's cover).

If I attempt to use a 2 x 5 connector (yielding two USB-A FEMALE ports) I get an error message "a USB device has failed", the USB-A female ports on the 2 x 5 connector do not recognize any keys, nor do any of the onboard ports (on the front and rear of the machine). This appears to crash the entire USB bus.

If I remove the 2 x 5 and replace it with ONE 1 x 4 (yielding ONE ISB-A Female port) the port works fine, as do all the other USB-A ports on the machine. This leaves one empty row of 5 pins on the internal plug

Is it possible to use two 1 x 4 connectors to get two internal USB-A Female connectors, since the 2 x 5 doesn't seem to work? Is there ANY way to get TWO internal USB-A female connectors?

It would appear that the double connector has a problem as the standard USB port header can use either two single USB connectors or the double.

Thanks for the clarification.

I flipped the adapter plug around 180 degrees, and now both USB adapters work off the internal pins. The adapter must be inserted on the pins so that the black wire is on the end facing the front of the z640.

I have seen some dual internal USB adapters with 9 holes, and there are 9 pins on the motherboard, so that would have kept me out of trouble. However, the adapter I had contained 10 holes, so it could fit on the pins both forwards and backwards.

My bad.
