Tried using the only USB C port that is on front of machine for 1st time with an SD card reader. Logik make.
Could not get the reader to be recognised properly was bleeping at me all the time.
Went into systems/setting/other devices and could see the device on there was flashing on and off i.e recognised, then not.
Would occasionally come up with driver error but check on that said working properly.
Tried the reader and card on an ASUS lap top and that functioned properly
Consulted a knowledgeable friend who thought that there was insufficient juice on the PC but said all laptop USB's are fully powered which would explain the difference between the 2 machines. Additionally the reader could be a power hungry one.
Will try and USB to USB C adapter lead when get one to see if that will work
Anyone know? Thanks.

There are a couple of things that can cause this.
Look for debris in the USB-C socket. Use a magnifier and a light if necessary. An air duster can be useful to dislodge debris.
The barrel of the USB_C card reader attachment may not be long enough to fit securely in the socket. This happened to me and I had to use a razor blade to cut away enough of the plastic to allow the metal connector (barrel) to fit further in and make a good contact.
Possibly when inserting it was momentarily removed or wiggled in such as way a brief disconnect occurred. You may find it necessary to power down the system to "clear" the port handler so it will work properly. Normally, one uses an "eject" command before unplugging a USB appliance.

Thanks for that quick reply it looks a very plausible cause. Cannot see anything in the socket, before I try fettling the reader will get a adapter cable to try in an USB A port to see if can learn anything from that. Have got a little compressor will blow some air in to clear. Would be interesting if someone knows that the PC does not supply enough power but the Lap top does.
