My computer USB ports started to make one of my devices overheat! I have a Lifescan Blood Meter and the USB ports (all of them) will no longer recognize the device and when you plug it in it gets so hot that you can't even touch it.
I have spent 4 hours with LifeScasn support trying everything from updating drives, reinstalling software, booting in Safe mode... They even sent me a new meter. When the 2nd meter did the same thing, they said it must be a computer problem. They said its possible my MotherBoard or USB ports are putting out too much power...How would I check this and/or fix this???
All other devices (Brother Printer, Pioneer DVD, WD back up drives, Mouse, Keyboard, USB Hub) work fine, but the meter is the only one that has rechagreable battey. Please any thoughts? Thanks
Peace,
LD

Hi @userld,
I reviewed the post comprehensively. You've been awesome to work with and have done superlative troubleshooting. Hats off to you for a job superbly done. 🙂 If you try the other USB devices like flash drives, USB mouse or a digital camera and if these devices work correctly, then the power from the USB ports are correct and not high. Otherwise, these devices would also get damaged. The logic is simple. It can't be that 1 device does not function and all other devices work correctly on the USB ports like USB mouse, flash drives etc.
You have the latest bios version installed on the computer. Please do not reinstall the bios. Instead, makes sure that you check the link in my previous post to restore the power options to defaults or balanced.
Trust me I've done all I can to assist you by keeping your best interest in mind. You've been commendable and it has been an absolute privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

Hi @userld,
Thanks for reaching out to the HP community. A very good day to you. 🙂 I understand that you require assistance regarding issues a specific life scan device that overheats when connected to the USB ports of the computer. It will be a delight to assist you. 🙂
A commendable job of troubleshooting, terrific description and a smart analysis of the issue was done before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 You are a valued HP customer and I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂
For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.
- Did you try this lifescan device on a different computer?
- Did you update the bios of this computer
- For a start please update the bios and chipset drivers of the computer from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-ENVY-27-All-in-One-Desktop-PC-series/8499712/mode... please select the correct operating system and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Then check again. If it still does not work, please change the power settings to defaults from this link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04752217
and check if this does the trick for you.
- Then please try this specific device on a different computer and check.
- Finally, if flash drives, memory cards and a digital camera or web camera connect fine to multiple USB ports of the machine without hassles, then the power supplied by the USB ports are just fine. The device needs to be checked or change the brand of this specific device.
- If other USB devices work fine on the computer, the USB ports cannot be faulty or High powered because all USB devices should then overheat.
- Finally please use USB 2.0 ports and not USB 3.0 ports.
This should do the trick for you. Please keep me posted. I will keep a watch for your reply.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

Your questions... Sorry this is my only computer. Meter was working fine unti one day the Computer would not recognize it. Any reloading drivers and of course checking different USB ports, they sent me a new meter, with same results. They were thinking since the meters got so hot you couldn't touch it, it has to be the drives or the mother board. I have some difficulty with my 2 Western Digital back up drives. Normally have to plug and unplug them serveral times to get them to work. The meter support people said the meter has a rechargable battery and they is what is getting so hot, and possible fryed the 2 meters. They have sent a third, but I am trying to see how to check the power outage.
I tried downloading and installing the Bios from that link, but it is from 2015 and version A0.00. My system has A0.11. The file hung up my computer and did not seem like it installed.. I tried twice.
I will try your last solution. Something seems to be off with my USB drives...!
Peace,
LD

Well the 3rd One Touch Life Scan Blood Monitor was finally recognized by the USB port, but it was still showing an error in the Device Manager. A CP210X driver could not be found (never had this error before, only overheating of the device) So after downloading that driver, my monitor is working again and not getting hot! Thanks for the help.. Wish all techs were as friendly!!
Peace,
