I'm having problems with updating my bios, I want to upgrade my CPU but need to update the bios first, does anyone know how to get this done? because my warranty has expired HP support isn't much help at all.

@Rich450 , welcome to the Community.
Due to the age of your computer, released in 2009, HP doesn't provide software and driver updates. Here is the Product Specifications page. The processors in the section titled "Processor/Processor upgrade information" are the only ones that have been fully tested to be compatible with the motherboard even if there was a BIOS update. The software and driver page is not available any longer.

Hi old_geekster,
I have a new CPU which I did use the specifications page so thought it would work but when I installed it what came up on the screen was CPU wasn't supported and then it shuts down. I put the CPU that came with the unit back in so now trying to update the bios hoping this will fix the problem. Having a big problem trying to update the bios.

As @old_geekster mentioned this is an older system and HP as well as many other OEM's no longer support many of the older ones. What usually happens is the websites get updated but links to old software go missing but the drivers are still there just hard to find.
It turns out that your motherboard is M2N78-lA (Violet3) and that motherboard is mentioned over at bios-mods where a user was successful in updating to a better CPU. I suspect you have to be a member to obtain details but the link to the discussion is here https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Pegatron-M2N78-LA-Violet3-GL8E-CPU-support
Bios 5.08 can be obtained here https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software1...p46427.exe
and is dated July 9, 2010. I do not know of any other bios. From the discussion a mod was made to the bios to allow the AMD X4-955 CPU. to run
'
The download link to the 5.08 bios is on an HP server so it is trustworthy. I would not trust any bios mod unless I had done the mod myself. Note that updating a BIOS especially on an older system is always dangerous. You might consider budgeting to get a newer system.

Hi Beemerbike,
I did the download didn't take very long at all it went well. I hope it will also work for the AMD X4 965 I have. I will let you know if it works or not, I really appreciate the links for the downloads. The system works fine even though it's old just wanted to see if could get it to work a little better.
Thanks so much.

I made a mod to add microcode for a Xeon on a Dell 435mt but it did not work as explained in this thread
https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Dell-435mt-microcode-Xeon-update-did-I-do-this-right
it was actually pretty easy to do with that MMtool
if you join that forum you might list me as a referral that way I might move above level 0

Hi
so ok, or not?
check, because if like other user, you try the black edition version (tdp 125w ), even with the bios update, normally it does not work, which would explain why you cannot here

TDP: 95 watt
if not yet tested, and it is, do not risk the destruction of the motherboard with a modified update

Just got done and no it didn't work.
The company that I got the CPU form has been working with me on this as well they tested CPU's on a mother board like mine and the 945 an 965 won't work but the 955 will so going to do a swap with them. I do have the 5.08 bios update as well.
Thank you for all the links, lots of good information pertaining to this problem.

You will need that mod to the 5.08 bios for the 955 to work. I assume you downloaded it earlier.
To get the 965 to work you would have to find a bios with the microcode, extract it using mmtool and insert it into the 5.08.
Or you can ask at the forum.

Yes, I did the 5.08 update. The company I got the CPU from is going to send me a 955 they actually did a test with a motherboard like the one I have the 945 and 965 won't work but the 955 did. In one of your previous posts, you had mentioned the 5.08 update was done to accommodate the 955 CPU.
I don't know enough to do a change in the biso microcode I would like to know how but...no.
