Desktop, Windows 7 home premium. Compaq model cq5300y. 64 bit. update 18 days ago, gave lost wi fi and lost internet. Wi fi was restored by cable company. Still have no internet. Troubleshoot says "could not find driver and adaptor". Tried recovery 3 times. Do not know were to look for driver name, to download and instal using flash drive from different computer? Or is their a way to search my PC to find the old driver?

i doubt a ms security update was the cause of your internet problem(s)
but lets do a quick check list
if you connect to the router via wireless skip the cat 5 questions
on the back of your computer where the wired cat 5 cable connects is there a light on?
at your wireless router where the cat 5 cable from the computer ataches is there a light on?
are you able to access your wireless routers setup page using it's ip address with your web browser?
using device manager, do you see any yellow or red signs next to the listed devices?
this model computer did not come with a wireless adaptor, so if using wireless one was added at some point i need to know the wireless cards make and model
if using wireless to connect try this,
if the computer is within a reasonable distance, please connect a cat 5 cable between the computer and the wireless router
and see if windows can now get internet access

Im not sure what a Cat 5 cable is but im guessing its the Yellow cable from my Cable provided box (think called a modum) to the Ethernet Box, and Gray cable from their goes to the PC. My Wi Fi is working for my Phone and Ipad. But the PC network is not working. troubleshoot says no driver could be found. Both WI Fi and internet was working 18 days ago. 5 days ago i called my cable provider and they sent signal through cable and wi fi started working again. Everything hooked up properly. Only can not get on PC internet. But computer may still be sble to receive some updates when i looked undef recent updates. Yes, the Green and Blue lights are working in the modum or adaptor boxes (if thats what they are called). The network trouble shooter shows no conection to internet. Did you want me to look in control panel for that devise manger? Im sure were to look for my Drivers names. Im thinking i need to upload onto a flash drive a driver, and move to my PC to fix problem. Unless somebody can tell me were to look for my Drivers. In Internet Options, Conections. Shouldnt a driver name show up?

Under control panel.. Devices and printers.. I found an item called Acer s202HL.. Generic PnO Monitor... Driver details... says system32\Drivers\monitors.sys ... Is that my driver name? ...or if i do a driver search on PC i found Device Manager ... and under System Devices.. i see a .. microsoft system management BIOS Driver... or a NVIDIA nforce PCI system management... Are any of those areas to look for my driver?

yes cat 5 is the cables that connet PC to cable modem or router
do you have a combined wireless and router device, that then connects to the PC and a cable modem? (two devices + PC)
or are you using a cablemodem/wireless/router device (everything connects to one device
please read this link:
again, do you have any device under device manager that have a yellow or red symbol?

I believe the answer is yes. I have combined boxes. One is connected to the cable runing into the house. Believe thats a modum. It has green lights always on, showing power, cable, and pc are on. The send and receive are flashing sometimes. The cat cable runs from their to my NetGear (for wi fi) box, and from their a cable runs to my PC. The PC trouble shoot options allcan not find a Driver, or say a Drive needs to be installed. The internet does not work. I can receive and send emails from both my ipad, and my phone.
When i do a PC search, and find Device Manager, and open each item in the list. None of the icons are red or yellow. No matter were i search or trouble shoot my computer, it comes back to a Driver can not be found.
I will try the web site link now from my ipad.

not to nicpick but it's cable "Modem" and does this device only have two connections/jacks labled WWLan (or internet) and Lan
i need to confirm that the wireless router is seeing the PC in it's list of connected devices if not then the issue is possibly the onboard nic and i'll show you how to check if it's working

No issues are showing in the only Displayed Adapters General, or resources areas.
I actualy found and saw that same stuff a few days ago, when trying to figure this out.
i can find no NIC card area in searching. The issues that show are only when troubleshooting, saying no driver is found. Could the issue be from conflicting Firewalls? Or from some type of settings in Internet Options, having to do with LAN settings? I read that someplace... I actually had this same issue about 6 months ago, and a year before, but fixed it myself, but do not know which fix i tried worked. I remember fooling around in internet options, my Net Gear, doing a few Recoverys, and shutting my PC on and off. Till it worked again.

your network card is under "Network Settings" you need to click on the ">" to expand the listing
follow these directions in order

Options on back are Power In, a reset button, the Cable Company cable, Ethernet (that has the cat cable going to the Net Gear wi Fi box), and an unused USB cable (a bit narrower then the cat cable, size of tellephone jack) and
