OMEN 30L Desktop GT13-0000i (236B1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

So... the Omen 30L has a proprietary RTX3080 with a 12pin power supply. I am about to pull the trigger on the Asus Dual Fan small form factor 8pin RTX4070. Here is what I imagine to be true. Can I get a confirmation?

  1. The RTX3080 turns 2-8pin power connectors into a single 12pin. I think I can simply remove that adaptor and use a single 8pin, correct?
  2. The Asus RTX4070 consumes less power, which should make it fine to use the single 8pin power, correct?
  3. I've read the fans in the Asus RTX keeps the GPU a lot cooler, but will airflow through the design of that card run hot air into the case in an odd manner?
  4. GOOFY side question: I have an older Razer Core v2 external enclosure. I believe, being the power supply in that is 500w and nothing else is running on it, I should be able to put the old HP RTX3080 into that enclosure and maybe use it with my Macbook and ROG Ally X via Thunderbolt 3, maybe!? I believe I could reuse the dual 8-pin to 12pin power adapter from the 30L in that enclosure, but here is the question. I have heard that while owners can upgrade the GPU of the HP OMEN 30L, that there is something about the RTX card itself that keeps it from working in other scenarios (like in another PC, but maybe it is fine in an enclosure!?) Thoughts? Experiences?

The biggest concern might actually be the size of the card. It seems the RTX4070 cards are all basically 3-slot cards, but the HP Omen 30L currently has an RTX3080 that is 2-slot. But will it fit?

Greetings @enginpost

Welcome to the HP Forum.

1. This is correct.

2. Yes. I have an Asus 4070: dual fan, dual slot graphics card. But this card is installed in an NZXT mid-tower ATX case. It has one eight pin PCIe connection.

4070s require less power when compared to a typical 3080.

3. The blower style Nvidia reference cards can do this. The Asus dual fan would work similar to the current 3080 you are using.

4a. It may be possible to try the 3080, using an external enclosure, on a MacBook with the correct PSU. I don't use Apple PCs.

4b. I could not verify if HP graphics cards don't work in other PCs. The 3080 should work in any compatible PC if the HP 3080 uses standard Nvidia drivers.

My 4070 is a 2.5 slot card. You don't want a new graphics card butting up against the power supply. No airflow equals a hot card.
