Pavilion Desktop PC 570-p0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The 256GB SSD (Windows:C) on my two month old HP Pavilion Desktop PC 570-p0xx is rapidly filling up, especially after the recent Windows 10 Creators Fall Update.

Could you please confirm whether this PC is capable of taking a larger capacity SSD in place of the existing one?

I was thinking of something like the Samsung 950 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD or Samsung 960 PRO V-NAND NVMe PCIE M.2

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions with regards to upgrade paths.

Obviously very reluctant to scrap a PC that is only two months old.

Many thanks.

Hi

Seeing all kinds of posts saying you are good to go.

Your motherboard supports PCIe 3x4.

Sata will not work.

Hi

Please provide exact product number.

Three possible motherboards are used in this product series.

Two motherboards will support M.2 NVME PCIe 3x4 data drive.

HP usually includes a standard HDD for data storage/program installation in this situation.

What do you see in File Explorer?

Hi Tom,

Many thanks for you reply.

The product number is 1ZM85EA#ABU

According to the HP page (link above), the motherboard has the following expansion slots.

One M.2 socket 1, key A

One M.2 socket 3, key M

One PCI Express x16

Details about the currently installed drive.

256 GB PCIe NVMe TLC M.2 Solid State

  • Size: 256 GB
  • Interface: M.2
  • Type: TLC Solid State

I just need to know if the existing 256GBSSD can be replaced with a larger capacity one

Many thanks again for your help.

Hi

You are welcome.

Yes, you can replace the drive. The HP specs state you also have a 3TB HDD in there.

It (NVME drive) should be a 2280. Verify this.

You can save some time if you image the current drive to external backup.

Create a rescue USB boot stick using whatever imaging program you decide to use. I like Macrium free.

Then transfer the rescue image to the new drive.

You will not have to rebuild the system from scratch.

Hi Tom,

Excellent, many thanks for confirming that.

After being advised (on HP Chat) that the M.2 256GB SSD (Windows:C) drive could not be replaced with one of a higher capacity, I was very disappointed at the prospect of scrapping a two month old PC.

You have made my day!!!

Yes, it does indeed have a 3TB (DATA:D) HDD, but it's the M.2 256GB SSD (Windows:C) drive that I wish to updrade.

I will probably put the new (higher capacity SSD) into a USB-C enclosure and copy the image from the existing 256GB SSD.

Many thanks again, you've been most helpful.

Hi SymfonyNick

You are welcome.

HP Support told you you could not replace the drive with a higher capacity drive? I usually do these drives in Asus or Gigabyte motherboards and have never had any problems.

You have an M.2 Key M socket so it should work. Double check the length of the current drive against a standard 2280 replacement drive.

Maybe we should get confirmation from another forum member on this before you take the plunge.
