I'm currently fighting the size limit on my 256 GB SSD boot drive on my Z440 Desktop (Intel Xeon E5-1660v3 3.0 20M 2133 8C CPU)
Is there a compatible 512 SSD that can be swapped into its place? Are there detailed instructions on how to do the swap?
Thanks.

Hard drive (512GB) is compatible with your PC. You can have two hard drives in your Pc, first SSD (256GB) with system and second SSD 512GB to storage your data.
If you don`t need 256GB hard drive, you can remove it. Remeber, if you want remove disk recover your data.
In Youtube you can find video about mounting drive.

If you will mount disk you must add it in Windows Disk Manager.
