Hi,
I’m looking to upgrade my GPU to the MSI - NVIDIA RTX 3050 GAMING X 6G - 6GB GDDR6 - PCI Express 4.0 and want to confirm its compatibility with my system.
Here are my current system details:
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 770 (integrated)
Motherboard: HP 8AC1, KBC V12.03.27
PC Model: HP Elite Tower 800 G9 Desktop
Processor: Intel i9-12900 CPU
Operating System: Windows 11
Could you please confirm if the new GPU is compatible with this setup?

Welcome to our HP Community forum!
Yes, your HP Elite Tower 800 G9 Desktop is compatible with the smaller-sized (dual fan) MSI RTX 3050 Gaming X 8GB, as long as you got at least a 310-watt power supply, and one 8-pin PCIe power cable. If you got a 400-watt or 550-watt power supply installed (with p/n: N03175-001 / M86264-001 respectively), these power supplies are equipped with at least one 8-pin (6+2-pin) PCIe power cable.
Most unfortunately, I don't see any purchase options for these power supplies online at the moment, not even via HP:
If you got a 310-watt power supply (open up your PC and look at the power supply's label) without a PCIe power cable, you can use a dual 15-pin SATA to PCIe 8-pin power cable adapter, such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/PCI-Cable-15-pin-Express-Adapter/dp/B07FK8SJTV/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2IVHBIE31FIA0&..., and if it is the case that you don't have two free 15-pin SATA power cables available, you'll also have to buy a 15-pin SATA power splitter cable such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/Mini-Extension-Splitter-Adapter-Chassis/dp/B07M99R88S/ref=sr_1_6?crid=8XBNB0M....

Thanks!
I checked and do NOT have 310W PSU, it's only 260. I would like to also upgrade this and was thinking of something like "Thermaltake - SMART 700W ATX 80 Plus Power Supply". I think it has all the correct connectors but I saw my motherboard has a ribbon cable from the PSU to the PWRCMD area on the motherboard. Do I need an adapter?

Interesting: I thought there was a 310-watt power supply, but instead your PC platform only has the 260-watt, 400-watt, and the 550-watt power supplies available:
Link: https://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c08017769.pdf.
Since a 260-watt power supply is altogether insufficient to power an RTX 3050, you'll need to purchase either the 400-watt or the 550-watt power supply.
Unfortunately, there is no ATX power supply adapter available for your PC.
Here are some UK-based purchase options for the 400-watt and 550-watt power supplies:
HP N03175-001 (400-watt) power supply purchase option: https://www.lambda-tek.com/HP-N03175-001-sh/B47115171?srsltid=AfmBOorWMyJitxl6I4l4DLSc5C3A3XZNfHw5w9....
HP M86264-001 (550-watt) power supply purchase option: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/405359783923?_skw=HP+M86264-001+SKO-PSU+550W&itmmeta=01JDE8CWXZ7ZGCM275ET....

Thanks, that is what I thought.
To make sure, this PSU is designed by HP and should be compatible, correct?

You are correct that the 400-watt power supply you referenced is made by HP, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it would actually work and/or is compatible with your PC.
You'll have to carefully check your 260-watt power supply's "P2" power connector, and see what the wire configuration is: I believe it will look like this:
And not like the 400-watt power supply you referenced:
Disclaimer: since HP does not provide a comprehensive power supply compatibility chart, sadly, you will have to experiment with power supplies like so many of us had to do.
The 400-watt power supply with p/n: L04618-800 may be your best bet if you don't want to purchase the OEM 400/550-watt power supplies I recommended, as seen here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/285458372229?_skw=L04618-800&itmmeta=01JDEBZ95BPKNZF5FYG0TAEMY0&hash=item42..., or: https://www.ebay.com/itm/275424620657?_skw=L04618-800&itmmeta=01JDEBZ95C13GB0MT9GG60PE8E&hash=item40....
The challenge is that none of us know for sure if this is going to work.
The aforementioned L04618-800 400-watt power supply is my very best guesstimate...

You are right, the ribbon pin in my desktop has 7 pins while theirs has 3. I doubt it will work.
I kept searching and found this PSU. It says its 400W and has the 7 ribbon pins. Can you confirm the compatability?

The "P2" power connector looks OK, but I cannot confirm it because the part number (M76036-001) doesn't give me any information: "No additional information found in PartSurfer." in HP PartSurfer (see: https://partsurfer.hp.com/?searchtext=M76036-001).
That doesn't necessarily mean that this power supply is incompatible with your PC. The Seller claims, and I quote: "Topic: For HP 680 G9,800 G9, Power Supply".
All I could tell you is that this power supply may work, but I cannot 100% confirm it.
