Recently bought this desktop second-hand it currently has a rtx 2060 inside and I want to upgrade it to a rtx 3070. The rtx 2060 is connected with a 6 pin connector and I have 1 6 pin connector still free. However the rtx 3070 I got from a friend has an adapter cable that needs 2 8 pin connectors. Now the desktop has a psu that provides 700 watt so in theory this should be enough for the card.

Is it possible to do this upgrade with adapter cables from 6 to 8 pin? Or does anyone know if a different cable exists with 6 pin connectors instead of 8?

Otherwise is it possible to upgrade/change the PSU for the z440 case? Which are compatible?

@RBBG,

Welcome to our HP community forum!

I got good news for you: the 700-watt power supply's 6-pin PCIe power cables are each capable to deliver 12V x 18A = 216-watt of power:

Meaning, you can use 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe power adapter cables, like I did in my HP Z440 Workstation upgrade project: Solved: Upgrading an HP Z440 Workstation - HP Support Community - 9015888.

You are correct: a 700-watt power supply provides ample power for an RTX 4070, not just in theory.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,
