Is it possible to upgrade hp victus 15l from rtx 3060 ti to a rtx 5070. Are there any models that fit? Also my victus came with a 550w power supply, do i need to upgrade it? What psu are compatible and where to buy them?

Welcome to the HP Forum.

I've seen many folks in this Forum have a PC POST problem after installing a PCIe 5.0 graphics card in a HP consumer Desktop PC. The MB can't talk to the PCIe 5.0 graphics card.

You might want to look at an Nvidia dual fan, dual slot 4070.

A 4070 can work with a 550 watt power supply.

Many AIB dual fan, dual slot 4070 cards come in at around 10.5 inches in length

Measure along the PCIe x16 slot to check maximum graphics card length.

Hey, I know pre-builts are always funky. But any other system a PCIe 5 GPU just drops down to Gen 4 if the motherboard can’t support it. It’s automatic, and never an issue.   Does the HP Reno2 motherboard just give up when it sees a Gen 5 gpu and refuse to just downshift to Gen 4?

Yes, a PCIe 5.0 card will work with retail PCIe 4.0 MBs. I routinely install Nvidia cards and AMD 5.0 cards in retail 4.0 MBs.

I guess HP would have to update the BIOS on some PCIe 4.0 MBs to support PCIe 5.0 graphics cards.

You could always try a 5.0 card to see if your PC's MB is compatible.

You might have to return the graphics card if your PC can't talk to the 5.0 graphics card.

It kills me that this would even be an issue. Pretty much HP would have had to go out of their way to bork Gen5 GPU support when the underlying H670 chipset by default handles a Gen5 GPU without issue as any other motherboard would.

With that said, I have seen RTX 5060 Ti’s running just fine in these systems on YouTube.  But if I’m going to upgrade from my 4070 it will be to nothing less than a 5070. And worth noting there is only one 5070 I am aware of that will fit in this chassis.

MSI NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 SHADOW 2X Overclocked Dual Fan 12GB GDDR7 PCIe 5.0 Graphics Card

This is it. I’m unaware of any 5070, 5070 Ti or higher that can fit in the Victus 15L’s exceedingly tiny chassis.

Also, I would upgrade the psu from the 500W to a 650 or 700W from some random HP G2 or Z-Workstation via amazon to pull this off:)

Sure hope it works…. Because if not then this system

is gonna die eventually as a i9-12900KF, 32GB DDR4, Samsung 990 2TB SSD, RTX 4070 with single 8-pin power (taken from a Lenovo desktop due to its tiny tiny gpu size).

I know you basically can’t upgrade the cpu much higher, and honestly even if a 13th gen worked it’s not much of a bump in performance.  So the gpu would probably be it.

You have done due diligence.

Doing a PCIe 5.0 graphics card on a PCIe 4.0 HP PC is a hit and miss proposition.

I used to buy OEM PCs. Ran into the roadblocks you are experiencing.

So I have been building PC's for many years (decades in fact).

But you can always use many of the HP currently installed non-proprietary PC components in a new build if you can't get an Nvidia 5000 series graphics card working with your HP PC.

Sadly, it is not a good time to build a new PC given rapidly rising component costs for: memory, SSD's, and graphics cards.

Each PC option (OEM vs build your own PC) has its positives and negatives. OEM PCs provide a blanket warranty and some peace of mind. But component upgrade options can be limited.

A DIY PC provides component upgrade options with longer individual component warranties. But you must solve any hardware/software problems.
