48gb seems to work according to this site

https://cloudninjas.com/collections/hp-z400-ram-memory-upgrade#:~:text=The%20HP%20Z400%20Workstation....

I have 12gb of non ecc and am planning to upgrade to 24gb using non-ecc.  I also have a standard atx case and atx power supply and GTX-1070.  Both x5680 & Nvidia are liquid cooled.  I had to mod the power supply cable to get the ATX power supply to work with the motherboard..
