Hi David,

Glad you reminded me about the L shaped slots and I will be sure do watch for them. A clean install sounds like a good choice and will get rid of the garbage that's collected over the years.  Starting with a clean slate will be refreshing and I also will be more aware about downloading files and unnecessary items in the future.

You brought up some great points, so the old drive will not stay attached for various reasons and only used as needed. I'm so excited about the speed that will be gained with a SSD drive and now the expanded space available to use.

All of this information you have provided helps tremendously and gives me support for this weekends project.  You have been the most wonderful help for a newbie trying to upgrade his system.  Wish your kindness and willingness to give would spread to everyone. Thank you so much for the detailed explanations and the professionalism you present.

My goodness, on the sea in Italy sounds really nice about now! I'm in 110 degree heat in Las Vegas with a cool down this week of 100!

Thank goodness I found this HP support community.  The upgrade turned out to be exactly as you described and everything worked as you instructed with a super easy installation of the SSD.  The PC now boots in 7 seconds verses 10 minutes or longer.  The system allowed me to access all files on the old drive through the USB connection.  I already had an Orico sata external enclosure case so that helped.  Now I'm slowly adding only necessary programs and will not be adding any garbage to a fresh system.

I would highly recommend other newbies to refer to this forum for support because an expert like yourself makes the task so much easier.  I love my HP desktop and will always know where to come for any more questions. Thank you for your support and replying so quickly during this journey.

Glad you have the machine up and running again. 

You have real heat there. Here it reached about 37° today, high humidity. However, even though I am Irish, have been living near the sea here in Italy the last 20 years. (at least somewhere to cool down).
