Yesterday I ordered a Z2 Tower G9 Workstation and had an afterthought that it might be underpowered:

- Intel Core i7-14700

- RTX A4000 (16Gb)

- 64 Gb RAM

- 1 Tb ssd

- 2 Tb sata

The machine comes with a 350W power supply.  The RTX A4000 typically has a TDP of around 140W. For the Core i7-14700 the power draw under load is around 125W-253W depending on turbo boost usage. When you consider the memory, storage, and peripherals, total power consumption could be somewhere between 275W and 350W under full load.

I'm concerned that the given PSU is at the upper limit of what it can handle, and could potentially be strained if both the CPU and GPU are running at maximum load simultaneously. I do plan to put the system under heavy workloads for extended periods (training ML models).

Given the above, would it make sense to upgrade to a power supply in the 500W-600W range?

If so, does HP offer one? Or do I need to search for a compatible one elsewhere?

@killerrabbit,

Better to err on the side of caution.

Yes, HP offers a number of power supply upgrade options: a 450-watt unit with p/n: M86371-001, a 500-watt unit with p/n: L77487-001, L89233-001, L81009-800PA-5501-2HA, and a 700-watt unit with p/n: M86370-001, which is what I would (strongly) recommend. Justification: better to have it (power) and not need it, than needing it and not having it.

You can purchase the 700-watt power supply online, but only via HP (for now), via this link: HP PartSurfer.

The 500-watt power supply can be purchased via eBay, such as this Trusted eBay Seller: 500W For HP 280 G8 Pro Z2 TE01 TG01 Power Supply Unit PSU L77487-001 L89233-001 | eBay.

Hope this was helpful.
