Hi there,

I'm interested in upgrading my power-supply to 1000W or more.  I bought this OMEN desktop from the HP website back in 2023 and I'm just now realizing that I probably didn't buy a strong enough PSU. My current PSU is 600W and I'm reading that my PSU should be at least 800W. I'm also interested in eventually upgrading my graphics card from a 4090 to a 5090 and I want to make sure I have a strong enough PSU.

Am I able to install any 3rd party PSU on my motherboard or is the HP 8A96 11 motherboard incompatible with non-HP PSU's? Is it relatively easy to install a new PSU?

PC specifications:
OMEN HP 45L GT22-1xxx
13th gen intel i9-13900k
HP 8A96 11 MicroATX or ATX motherboard (unsure)
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090
64 GB RAM
1 TB SSD
1TB HDD

EDIT: I'm actually not sure if my motherboard is a Micro ATX or an ATX (I'm not very tech savvy)

A typical Nvidia 4090 requires a minimum 850 watt power supply. A typical 5090 requires a minimum 950 watt power supply.

I know HP does graphics cards to their specs but your PC should not have a 600 watt PSU if the PC is using a 4090 now.

HP does Micro ATX MBs in the 45L PCs.

A retail power supply will work with the HP MB and the 45L case.

Upgrading a power supply is a fairly complex procedure. And it will take a while to get the job done.

You'll have to disconnect all existing power supply connections to the MB and the graphics card.

Remove the HP power supply.

Install the new retail power supply. Buy a newer ATX 3.1 PCIe 5.1 PSU having the: 12V 2x6 connector and cable.

Reconnect MB and graphics card power cables.

Thanks for your response @Bill_To

Would you have a recommendation for either a 1000 watt or 1200 watt psu that would be compatible with my pc? Would either of these work?

1050 Watt
1200 Watt

Would you recommend having a professional install it if I don't have experience with psu installation?

This 1500 Watt is supposed to be good, but I have no idea if it'll be compatible with my pc.

My pleasure.

Either PSU you have referenced in your response will get the job done.

I would probably do a 1200 watt PSU with a 5090 to have additional power headroom.

I'm not familiar with power supplies referenced in your response.

I usually do: Asus, Seasonic, or Corsair power supplies.

And I check this Power Supply Tier spreadsheet when buying power supplies.

Thanks so much @Bill_To

I ended up purchasing this one.

I really appreciate the help! Now I just have to successfully and safely install it.

My pleasure.

I'm not familiar with Montech PSUs. I do have some Montech PC cases.

The cases are very good.

Have a local PC Tech do the upgrade if you are uncomfortable.

But it would be a learning experience if you're up to doing it yourself.

Your looking at two MB connections and the graphics card connector. That should be it unless your PC is using SATA SSDs, SATA HDDs, or the CPU AIO liquid cooler (if your PC has this) might need SATA power.

And SATA power or PCie power might be needed if HP installed a fan/RGB controller hub behind the MB tray where most of the cabling exists.

Don't do any sharp bends on the Nvidia 12 V 2x6 connector at the graphics card or the PSU.

Sharp bends on the 12 V 2x6 power connector are not good. Check this Site for more information on 12 V 2x6 cable issues.

Improper cable bends on the 12 V cable or wear over time could cause excessive and dangerous power loads over this cable resulting in damage to components.

Just wanted to update:

I successfully replaced the old psu with the new one. I think I did a good job with the routing and cable tying too.

As it turned out, I was mistaken about my old psu. It was actually already a 1200W psu (not a 600W). The good news is that the new psu is a definite upgrade over the old one even though it’s the same wattage. I also learned a lot in the process! My back was killing me at the end though because I was hunched over a lot for 2-3 hours haha.

Thanks again for the help 🙂

Good to see the upgrade went well.

I'll bet you had fun (minus your aching back) doing the upgrade.

Now, your next move down the road is to build a new PC from the ground up!
