Can I upgrade using an intel i7 4790K  4.0 ghz processor on a hp pavilion desktop model 550-044?

Here are the processor upgrades that are supported by the motherboard and HP:

 

TDP: Up to 88 W

  • Socket type: LGA 1150 (Socket-H3)

As you can see, the i7-4790K is not listed.  However, with that said, this doesn't mean that it won't work, but has not been tested to make certain it is compatible.  You would be responsible if I didn't work.

 

Personally, I have my doubts that you would see much performance increase with the K.  It denotes that the processor can be overclocked and since the K versions have not been tested for the motherboard, I doubt if the UEFI/BIOS has the settings to allow it to be overclocked.  You would be spending money for an option that you couldn't use.  Any of the i7 (Quad Core) processors would be a major improvement over the i3 (Dual Core) that came installed from the factory.
