Hi:
You can give it a try and you have 10 days to go back to W8.1 if things don't work right on W10 as long as you don't delete any of the upgrade files or Windows.old folder.
Go back to Windows 8.1 (microsoft.com)
You can get the free upgrade by making a bootable USB installation flash drive with the media creation tool from the link below.
Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
After the media has been created, open the flash drive in Windows explorer (this PC), and double click to run the Setup application you see listed there to begin the upgrade process.

If your windows 8 is 32 bit you cannot run the 64bit install
How to tell: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03666764
You must do a clean install of 64 bit deleting anything on the drive including partitons
To activate use you windows 8 key

Hi, @BeemerBiker
I used that method many times that I posted to do in-place upgrades to W10 from W7, W8 and W8.1.
I just upgraded a PC from W7>W10 last week using the method I posted.
Yes, you can still get a free Windows 10 upgrade. Here's how | ZDNET
