HP Pavilion Gaming stasjonær PC TG01 – 2000a
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. The HP Pavillion Gaming model I bought supports, and runs, the original memory/RAM at 3200mhz. But, I only got 16GB so I bought 2x16GB from HyperX.   Windows 10, CPU-Z and other apps all report that the new RAM only runs at 2400mhz. Reading other cases on here I see the word XMP showing up again, and again. But I find no options in HP bios.

HyperX states AMD support, and I followed the instructions on memory specs (3200mhz) from HP when I picked this up.

Can anyone help?

@hausnes -- this web-site: www.crucial.com provides a list of RAM sticks that are compatible with your computer, and the maximum RAM supported by your motherboard.

XMP, is not a official standard it's a format that intel used to overdrive memory back when they made performance motherboards

AMD is also using something similar to this, however OEM makers of AMD/Intel systems will not usually enable this bios setting to prevent service calls from users who would misconfigure the ram settings

only a very few HP performance oriented systems have bios's with memory overclocking enabled, the majority of systems will not have this option enabled for the reason stated above

try downloading "ryzen master" and see if it will allow ram configuration

Thank you for the advice. I wish I'd known about this before I paid for the RAM (which I still feel like should have worked, being the same specification that HP themselves are using), since I cannot return them. Oh well, maybe I'll build something using them later.

Or, should I just use the 32 GB RAM even at lower speeds? How much does the difference between 2400 and 3200 Mhz actually mean?

Thank you. I'm not sure if I dare try the AMD Ryzen Master program. It seems like it works for a lot of people, but some are having problems and have to remove the CMOS battery and whatnot. I'll stick to the 16 GB.

Calculate 3200 divided by 2400, and you'll see the ratio 4/3 -- the relative speeds of the two sticks.

However, the overall speed of your computer depends on five factors:

  1. the speed of the processor, and the number of "cores" that can work simultaneously
  2. the speed of the disk-drive -- a SSD is up to 5 times faster than the slower (5400 RPM) "spinning" disk-drives
  3. the speed of the RAM
  4. the "workload" (how many tasks and apps are simultaneously running)
  5. the amount of RAM -- when your apps are using most of the RAM, Windows writes some of the contents of RAM to the disk-drive, to make room within the RAM for some other application's need for RAM.  So, having 16GB should mean that you almost never use "most" of the RAM.

to "itsmyname" the original poster is talking about RAM SPEED not ram capacity

ryzen cpu's are influenced in overall system speed much more so than intel systems when it comes to the speed of the ram

for ryzen 3000 series 3200 ram speed is considered the sweet spot, for 5000 series 3600 is what you want

note that ram timings also play a part in ram overall speed it's possible to get a 3200 stick that's faster than a 3600 as the timings on the 3200 may be tighter (less) than the 3600

2400 is a official "JEDEC" speed (google if currious) and while slower than 3200/3600 is not something to go nuts about

if you install 3200/3600 ram along with 2400 ram the system will clock ALL RAM to the slowest speed (2400 in this case)
