I would like to upgrade my PC so I can play Starfield when it releases. I asked a friend who builds PCs to look at mine and he said I'd need a new processor, but as I've been reading about the various options my motherboard will support, I've found threads on the discussion boards here saying that some of those listed in the processor upgrade list could fry a motherboard if used, so now I'm uncertain whether I can trust the processors on that list or even if a processor upgrade would be enough to run the game smoothly without damaging my PC.

@Crixa , welcome to the Community.
What is the exact model of your computer? Once I have this information I will help you further.
I will add that if a processor is listed in the "Processor upgrade information" section of the Product Specifications it will be perfectly safe and compatible with your motherboard. If it is not listed in this section it will most likely not be compatible.
Also, here are the System Requirements for the game on Can You Run it.
