Hi I recently bought an Omen 40L from Best Buy and upon booting up the computer for the first time I received an error that the CPU fan wasn't working. Would like to replace my CPU fan, however the Cooler Master Hyper 212 I purchased doesn't seem to fit despite having am5 brackets on. What cpu coolers are compatible with this motherboard?

Hi @Heffelump,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties with your new OMEN 40L desktop, especially right after purchasing it—it’s disappointing when things don’t work as expected. Let’s ensure we get your system up and running smoothly with the right CPU cooler.
- Did you notice any other signs of overheating or performance issues when the error occurred?
- Could you confirm the specific CPU model and socket type in your OMEN 40L (e.g., AMD Ryzen or Intel Core series)?
- Are there any clearance limitations within the case, such as space around the CPU area or interference with other components (e.g., RAM or GPU)?
Let's try these steps.
Confirm the Socket Type:
- Check the OMEN 40L’s documentation or HP support to verify the exact motherboard model and CPU socket type. For example, AM5 brackets are designed for AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors but may differ slightly between coolers.
Measure Clearance Space:
- Ensure the Cooler Master Hyper 212 doesn’t exceed the case’s CPU cooler height limit. The OMEN 40L case typically supports coolers up to a certain height (e.g., ~165mm). Use a ruler or consult the manual to check.
Check for Interference:
- Verify that the cooler isn’t obstructed by nearby components like tall RAM modules or the GPU. If so, consider a low-profile cooler or one with adjustable mounting options.
Search for HP-Compatible Coolers:
- OMEN PCs often have proprietary motherboards or configurations. Visit HP support or forums to find recommended aftermarket coolers compatible with the OMEN 40L, such as the Noctua NH-U12S or be quiet! Pure Rock 2, which are known for broad compatibility and quiet operation.
Test with the Stock Cooler or Request Replacement:
- If the stock cooler isn’t functioning, contact HP Support or the retailer (Best Buy) to request a replacement or repair under warranty. HP may provide a direct replacement that ensures compatibility.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
