HP Pavilion p6204y
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I'm considering updating the existing E5400 processor to a Core 2 Duo E8500.  The E5400 has a 800 MHZ F/S Buss. The E8500, which is on the the HP list of supported processor updates for this desktop has a 1333 Mhz F/S Buss.  The current memory is DDR2 PC-6400.  Is this memory compatible with the proposed processor update or will I need to move to DDR2 PC-8000 memory at the same time?

Hi:

You already have the fastest memory installed that you can (PC2-6400).

The processor you want to install will work just fine with that memory, but as you can see, there will be quite a bottleneck between the 1333MHz processor communicating with the 800 MHz memory.  There's nothing you can do about it.

I have a HP dc7800 CMT business desktop PC with a similar Intel Series 3 chipset, and it is stuck with the PC2-6400 memory, and an E8300 1333 MHz processor.

Works just fine...just not the best configuration.

Ideally, you want the memory FSB to match the processor FSB for the best throughput.

However, the E8500 processor will give you more processing power and a larger L2 cache than the one you have now.

That is where the advantage lies.

Take a look...

Thanks, I had reviewed this info earlier and  made my selection of an E8500 for a processor update from the HP list to keep it simple but gain some performance improvement over the Pentium E5400. The E8500 has a 1333 Mhz front-side bus speed which the current motherboard supports per the hardware spec.

Motherboard: Asus IPIBL-LB  ,  Front Side Bus Speed -     800/1066/1333 MHz

If I update the processor, will there be any compatibility issues with the existing installed PC-6400 DDR2 (6GB)?

Just double checking before I move ahead.

In the document of Intel and based on the chipset of the motherboard would not have problem when placing the Core2 Duo E8500 is supported, when updating the processor referring to the RAM that is already known to be compatible and that Works, nothing to do With the processor upgrade.

It is always recommended to have the latest version of bios but not being forced in updating it, so you can change it.

My recommendation is not to put an Intel Core Quad 2 you could ask for an update of the bios and this is trimmed if this plate wants to take it to the limit, here could have drawbacks.
