HP Touchsmart 300-1028d
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
I want to upgrade the processor on HP Touchsmart 300-1028d. My choice is AMD Athlon II X4 605e (P). After reading some sources, there are two kinds of 605e which are with stepping C2 and stepping C3. Can I use both of them or does the HP Touchsmart 300-1028d only support one of them, may be just 605e with stepping C2?

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an  HP TouchSmart 300-1028d Desktop PC. I read that you would like to upgrade the processor and made a choice of the AMD Athlon II X4 605e (P). There are two kinds of 605e which are with stepping C2 and stepping C3 n and would like to know if you can use both processors. I'll surely assist you wit this.

I did some research and found the motherboard specifications for your PC. Please refer to the "Processor upgrade information".

Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

  • Socket AM3

  • Supports the following processors:

    • AMD Athlon X4 600e and 605e (P)

    • AMD Athlon X3 400e and 405e (R)

    • AMD Athlon X2 235e and 240e (R)

NOTE: Other than the processors mentioned above, Hp has not tested the PC with any other processors.

Hope this answers your question. Feel free to keep me posted for any questions. Cheers! 🙂

I did some research too and found as you mentioned above and that AMD produced two 605e, rev.2/stepping 2 and rev.3/stepping 3. Can I use both of them since I do not know what the meaning nor the purpose of stepping in processor?

I did some research and see that the AMD Athlon II X4 605e (rev. C2) is compatible on socket AM3. And also the rev.3/stepping 3 is compatible with AM3 socket.

However, I still suggest you to consult a local technician or an authorized service center while replacing the processors. Because this is a very delicate thing to handle.

Hope this helps. Take care!
