HP Pavilion Desktop - TP01-1138no

Hello forum, my five year old Desktop is working just fine, but I'd love to replace the original 256 GB SSD system drive with a larger piece, 512 or even 1 GB - any suggestions as how to achieve this in the easiest way ? How do I transfer the Windows core boot files to a blank new SSD ? HAvenät tride this for many years, guess it was last time on a DOS something IBM PC where we made bit-by-bit images of the floppy drive 🙂

This is my platform data;
Datortyp x64-based PC
System-SKU 1G9T1EA#UUW
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700 CPU @ 2.90GHz, 2904 Mhz, 8 kärnor, 16 logiska processorer
BIOS-version och -datum AMI F.52, 2024-10-16
SMBIOS-version 3.2

========================================

I did find a suitable 1 TB SSD drive (manaufactured by HP :-)), but before ordering, I'd love to know how to
make a clean copy of the current SSD with operating system files and everything, plus how do I "swap" them once
I've copied all system files.  I do have a 1 TB HDD installed which I could use for temp storage and also boot drive
if it is any help.  THat saying, could I copy all the current SSD data to the HDD, use the HDD as system/C-drive, remove the old SSD and then copy all the system files onto the new 1 TB SSD ?

Great to hear your Pavilion TP01 is still going strong! Upgrading your SSD is a smart move for more space and potentially even better performance. Let’s walk through the process step-by-step so you can confidently upgrade your 256 GB SSD to a 1 TB SSD.

What You’ll Need:

  • Your new 1 TB SSD (great that it’s HP-branded!)
  • A SATA-to-USB adapter or M.2 enclosure (if cloning externally)
  • Cloning software (free options below)
  • A screwdriver (to open the case)
  • Optional: Your 1 TB HDD for temporary storage

Step-by-Step Guide

Backup Your Data

Before doing anything, back up your important files to your HDD or an external drive, just in case.

Clone Your Current SSD

You can clone your existing SSD to the new one using free software like:

  • Macrium Reflect Free
  • EaseUS Todo Backup Free

Steps to clone:

  1. Connect the new SSD via USB using an adapter or enclosure.
  2. Launch the cloning software.
  3. Select your current 256 GB SSD as the source.
  4. Select the new 1 TB SSD as the destination.
  5. Start the cloning process (this may take some time).
  6. Once done, shut down your PC.

Swap the Drives

  1. Open your Pavilion TP01 case (refer to this HP guide: Opening the Case).
  2. Carefully remove the old SSD.
  3. Install the new 1 TB SSD in the same slot.
  4. Close the case and power on your PC.

Your system should boot from the new SSD automatically. If not, enter BIOS (press Esc or F10 during boot) and set the new SSD as the primary boot device.

Optional: Use HDD as Temporary Boot Drive?

Technically possible, but not recommended. HDDs are much slower than SSDs, and cloning directly from SSD to SSD is more efficient and reliable. Use the HDD for backup or extra storage instead.

Want a Fresh Start?

If you prefer a clean install of Windows:

  1. Download the Windows Media Creation Tool: Microsoft Link
  2. Create a bootable USB.
  3. Install Windows on the new SSD.
  4. Activate Windows using your existing license (it should auto-activate if tied to your Microsoft account).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Many thanks for this, I have one more question I didn't but the SSD 1 TB yet, but looking at the inside of the unit, it is a Micron something.  On the Diagnosis tool its type/spec says the following;

Disk 1:   MTFDHBA256TCK-1AS1AABHA   238.47 GB

I found different variants of the 1 TB SSD on Amazon, how do I know which spec is correct ? Seems some are called M.2, for example, one expensive one is called

1TB PCIe 4x4 NVMe TLC SSD M.2 PCI Express 4.0 M.2 PCIe 4.0, at 300 USD 🙂  another one is much cheaper, 90 USD -

WD_BLACK SN7100 1TB NVMe SSD, M.2 2280, Snabba läshastigheter upp till 7250 MB/s, Next Gen TLC 3D NAND, WD_BLACK DASHBOARD

How do they differ and which spec should I choose ?

Thank you for your response, @PLov
You're very welcome, glad the guide helped! 😊

About your follow-up question great observation! Let’s break it down so you get exactly what you need without overspending.

Your Current SSD:

Based on the model you mentioned MTFDHBA256TCK-1AS1AABHA your Pavilion TP01 uses an:

  • M.2 2280 NVMe SSD
  • PCIe Gen 3 x4 interface
  • Capacity: 256 GB
  • So, when upgrading, you’ll want a 1 TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD that’s the most important part.

What SSD Should You Buy?

Look for:

Form factor: M.2 2280

Interface: NVMe (not SATA)

PCIe version: Gen 3 or Gen 4 (both will work)

Gen 4 SSDs are backward compatible with Gen 3 systems like yours. They’ll work fine, just run at Gen 3 speeds.

I hope this helps!
