Touchsmart 300 series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am doing several upgrades to my Touchsmart 300 AIO PC. Upgrades todate include:  4 core CPU, 8 & 16GB (not impossible) of ram, SSD, Blu-ray writer, mini PCIE SATA Port card, internal Data HDD, SATA and power cables for dual drive configuration.  These upgrades yielded solid improvements, here are my Chris PC Windows Experience Index (WEI)scores:

                                                                                                                                              Original             Upgraded

- Processor -- Calculations per second                                                                 6.2                      7.0

- Memory -- Memory operations per second                                                      5.9                      7.3

- Graphics -- desktop graphics performance                                                      4.3                      NA

- Gaming Graphics -- 3D business & gaming graphics performance         5.3                     9.9

- Primary System Drive -- Data disk transfer rate                                            5.5                     7.8

I also want to add a MXM graphics card, but the only part I cannot find is the one pictured below.

Does anyone know where I can find this particular MXM heatsink (part number unknown) that sits above the CPU heatsink (see photos)? Also, does anyone know the real part number so I can move forward with upgrading my Touchsmart?

So far all of my on-line searches have turned up no results (other than these two photos). There are other HP forum posts that reference a part number but that turns out to be a completely incompatible part for a completely different Touchsmart (and they said it was compatible with the 300 series Touchsmart--which was wrong. It's from the IQ500 [5189-3760] and is the supposedly compatible part, but it is clearly not.

If I have to, I will build a suitable replacement, but I would prefer to use the original part...as well as not having to build my own part...

Note - Ignore the red square around the cooling fan on the first photo and the yellow circles on the second photo.

Thanks in advance.

I suggest that you use the HP Partsurfer website to find the compatible parts.

Search with your PC's serial number to ensure compatibility.

Thanks, but I have been looking everywhere online, including HP Partsurfer, but I have had no luck because I do not know what the real part number is....

AlphaStealthSYS,

I upgraded my 300-1125 using an HP 656513-002 35watt thermal module on an Nvidia GeForce GT540M MXM card with 2 gb of on-board ram.

 undefined

I had to remove the fin bracket and some of the fins on both ends of the thermal module since it was not made for this PC and I had to carefully bend the heat pipe to make it fit behind the CPU fins in the spot shown in your 2nd photo. The heat pipe is very soft so bend it very carefully so asnot to crimp it (see below). I also had to cut away some of the plastci duct to make room for the angle of the 656513-002 heat pipe. If you could find the correct thermal module, you would not have to do this. See picture below.

Underneath the heat sink, I used a 1mm silicone thermal pad on the GPU and 2mm on the ram. Underneath the MXM card, I used 4mm pads between the ram and the bumps on the chasis and 6mm pad between the chasis bump for the back side card under the GPU. This way the chasis helps cooling the card on the back side.undefined

In order make the new MXM visible to the OS, you'll need to swith the video cable behind the motherboard from the embedded GPU connector to the MXM slot connector. See picture below.

The results were amazing! Together with 8GB of system ram and a Samsung 840 SSD, the Windows 7 Pro score went from :undefined

I don't know what the Windows 10 score would be.

GPU temperature is totally acceptable under normal use and playback. The hottest the GPU ever gets is during the Windows assessment test:undefined

Normally it stays in this range:undefinedThe old TouchSmart is now back to being a totally usable machine even capable of palying or streaming movies.

I am very pleased.

Enjoy

Daveman88 - A Question:  Did you have to do anything special to get the Nvidia GeForce GT540M MXM card to work?

Also, Interesting solution to the heatsink issue.  I have a different solution.  I am taking the same heatsink you used and disecting it and a Touchsmart 300 CPU heatsink and with a new 300mm heatsink creating one that will look very similar to the origonal (same basic dimensions (so it fits) and functions properly)...at least that is the plan.  By the way, I just upgraded to Windows 10 CE and everything looks great....
