Dear Forum,

Received the 2 x 8GB of Patriot Viper DDR3 PC3-14900, 1866 MHz, Non-ECC, UDIMM, 240-pin RAM modules (p/n: PV316G186C0K), to add to/compliment the 4 x 8GB of the Patriot Viper RAM already installed for a total of 6 x 8GB = 48GB RAM running at 1600 MHz:

And the 500GB Samsung 870 EVO SSD also arrived and installed:

Temporarily swapped the RTX 4070 with the RTX 2080, btw.

Ran UserBenchmark again:

Hi NonSequitur777, I am trying to do the exact same thing you did here with an old HP Z440 motherboard I found online. I have read several posts from you cataloging your experience. I now want to replace the Xeon E5-1620 V3 with the intel 6th Gen I7 like you. I am kindly hoping you are able to answer some of my questions before I start buying parts.

I was planning to buy 4 4TB SAS HDDs and connect it to the 4 SATA ports with a connector (gonna raid this after). I read that the motherboard has an inbuilt controller for SAS and I hope this is okay. Also, I am planning on getting a PCLe card for 4 NVME SSDs. I too read somewhere that this motherboard supports PCLe bifurcation I hope this is okay.

The specs of the motherboard says it supports up to 128 gb memory but I believe you said it could go up to 256 gb. I am confused. Also, if I were to get 3600 mhz ram that is not ECC ram, can i use it with the motherboard?

@DudeEX,

This link deals with the upgrading of an HP Z400 Workstation, this link deals with upgrading an HP Z440 Workstation: Solved: Upgrading an HP Z440 Workstation - HP Support Community - 9015888.

Total RAM that could be fitted in an HP Z440 Workstation is indeed 8x32GB =256GB as confirmed here: HP - Compaq HP Z440 Workstation | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com, and amongst actual Users here: HP Z440 Workstation Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

The fastest RAM can run on an HP Z440 Workstation platform is 2400 MHz, depending on what processor you got.

I believe only ECC RAM is compatible.

Don't know enough to answer your other questions.

Kind Regards,

NonSequitur777
