We are attempting to upgrade from the Intel Celeron G6900 that came with the product since the system does not run my son's games very well. My initial research said we should be able to use an Intel i7-14700K since it uses the same processor socket.

 

We changed out the processor and the system won't boot. It attempts to start up (fan kicking on etc.), beeps and flashes red, and then turns off and tries to boot again. 

 

The beeping doesn't seem to be a pattern and doesn't match and diagnostics I am seeing (only one beep and just keeps happening). We have confirmed the BIOS are up to the most current setting. The Component/Upgrades list for this product on the HP site does not include any details about processors. 

 

Are we out of luck with upgrading the processor? We just got this computer a few months ago and I have no experience with replacing motherboards so I am hoping we still have options. 

 

*EDIT - I believe the problem with the Intel i7 may be power supply - but would love any other insight on upgrading processor for this PC.*

I almost certain that you have to stay within the Intel Alder Lake processor series since the PC came with an Alder Lake processor.

 

This link has the list of supported processors in the model series by form factor.

I don't believe the i7-12700K would be a good option for you unless you change the power supply and I don't know what power supplies are available in the model series.

The stock heat sink is insufficient.

 

It's probably only rated for the 65W processors.
