I own Z620 with dual Intel Xeon E5-2680 v2.

It does great, but recently I have a need to run a software that requires support for AVX2.

So I am thinking of upgrading processors to Intel Xeon E5-2699 v4 (since they use same socket).

My question is, is it advisable to upgrade Z620? Did HP somehow locked their hardware/BIOS that would prevent me from upgrading?
I can get couple of used Intel Xeon E5-2699 v4 for $300 or a used HP Z840 with dual Intel Xeon E5-2699 v4 for $1300.

Which would be a better route? Would there be any speed advantage of getting Z840?
Help much appreciated.

@ZorroFox,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

In short: the Xeon E5-2699 v4 is not compatible with the HP Z620 Workstation platform.

And since you need AVX2 support, the best option for you would be to move up to the HP Z840 Workstation, which is compatible with AVX2 processors such as the Xeon E5-2699 v4.

Kind Regards,

Thank you both for the info.

I could probably upgrade to supported E5-2690, but one big thing I see that made the decision for me is that my

Z620 supports memory up to  DDR3 1600 MHz

While HP Z840 supports DDR4 2400 MHz.
