The above is a PCAUDIT print of the main details one of my  two Z420s.  Try as I might, I cannot upgrade to a higher spec E5-1650, or E5-2650, they just don't work in this pc. - ie it doesnt boot up to the BIOS.  My other Z420 does upgrade fine! 

 

Obviously I'm missing something, but I don't know what!

The one that is giving you problems is likely to have a chipset issue.

 

The BIOS version v03.95 that you listed was the one that was a microcode update which should have provided use of the SandyBridge processors.

 

 

At ten+ years of service, that one may be close to end of its service life.

Thanks Erico.  I did update to the latest BIOS but that made no difference!  Stranfe that my other Z420, same specs, did take a Xeon E5-1650, and then an E5-2650 both v2.  Hey ho, will keep thinking.  But l appreciate your help.
