After a recent BIOS reset my case and CPU fan speeds have skyrocketed when idling, and my BIOS doesn't allow me to change cooling/fan settings or create profiles. Weirdly enough it also gives me totally different rpm numbers depending on if i look from HWMonitor or BIOS thermal information - in BIOS it says the CPU fan speed is between 1100-1250rpm and case fan 1000-1200rpm or so - according to HWMonitor the CPU fan stays at 250-350rpm but FANIN1 spins at 2200-2750rpm. on HWMonitor the 2200 is the normal and it for no reason or under minor stress like old video games or youtube video it jumps to 2500 for random amount of times, under minor or heavy stress it goes to the 2750rpm and stays 10 minutes after the hardware temperatures have returned to idle.
This started after I rested my BIOS recently, when my power cut off during windows installation via internet and it got stuck on error, and as a noob I tried if reseting BIOS would have helped, and it didn't. I got the windows reinstalled with the help of a local PC store, and after that the fan issue started.
I don't know if it was the BIOS reset or what that caused this, because my BIOS doesn't allow changing fan settings or profiles, but it occurred at the same time so I wonder if the BIOS reset could have changed some stock fan setting that it doesn't allow me manually to change.
So my questions are: is this caused by the BIOS reset, and whether yes or no - what can I do to solve this? because the noise it makes is unbearable and often only way to reduce the (HWMonitor reported) fan speed to the normal rather quiet 2200RPM is to restart the PC - just to wait when it randomly starts again.
Edit: the idle temperatures are perfectly normal.

Hi @Neuntoter,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the BIOS reset may have indeed affected the fan settings or profiles on your HP Pavilion Gaming laptop, leading to the abnormal fan behavior you're experiencing. Here's what you can try to resolve the issue.
Update BIOS:
- Visit the HP support website and check if there's a newer version of the BIOS available for your laptop. If there is, download and install it following the instructions provided by HP. Sometimes, BIOS updates include fixes for fan control issues.
Reset BIOS Again:
- Try resetting the BIOS settings again to see if it resolves the problem. This time, ensure that the reset process completes successfully without any interruptions or power cuts.
Check for Fan Control Software:
- Some laptops come with proprietary fan control software provided by the manufacturer. Check if HP provides any software for controlling fan speeds or profiles for your specific model. If so, install and use the software to adjust the fan settings.
Update Chipset and Hardware Drivers:
- Ensure that all chipset and hardware drivers are up to date. Sometimes, outdated or incompatible drivers can cause issues with fan control. You can download and install the latest drivers from the HP support website.
Monitor System Temperatures:
- Keep monitoring your laptop's system temperatures using tools like HWMonitor to ensure they remain within safe limits. If temperatures are consistently high even at idle, it could indicate a cooling system problem that needs to be addressed.
By following these steps and potentially getting assistance from HP support, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the abnormal fan behavior on your HP Pavilion Gaming laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
