Hp p6803w
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I have a HP P6803w desktop computer that has a bad monitor. We thought a vizio led tv would work. My computer doesn't have an HDMI plug in the back only a vga plug. Bought the vga to HDMI adapter but the tv shows no signal message.  Checked all connections and everything is plugged in correctly. I'm wondering if the computer is just too old to use that way or is there a solution to this?

Hi and welcome to the forum.  Here ia support document showing the PC is question.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02859378

According to the "Back I/O ports" information that PC has VGA and DVI outputs.  Some of the VGA to HDMI adapters do not work as advertised because they are not "active".  Since VGA is analog and HDMI is digital, a DVI to HDMI adapter is more likely to solve the problem.

While that PC is old, it should still be able to use the TV as an output, when using the correct adapter.

As far as I can see there is only vga input on the back. I do not see the dvi input.

Click on the link in the previous post.  Scroll down to the "Back I/O ports"  and click on that heading.  DVI port is labeled #11

The cable worked for the display but I am not getting sound. How do I have to go about getting sound?

There is a good possibility that the sound will have to be supplied via a separate cable.  Many situations but it might not be possible.  You could look at the sound settings in the audio output of Windows to see if that model can supply audio over the DVI port, but I expect that a separate audio cable will be needed.

Not very computer savvy. What kind of cord would I need and which ports do I need to plug it into?

It depends on the audio inputs that the Vizio TV has.  If it can use a S/PDIF  source, then a RCA cable will work and use #1 on the "Back I/O" picture, same link as before.

If it can use an analog input, then using a standard audio cable 3.5mm jack #8 should work.  If it can take either one, using the S/PDIF  source would be preferred.
