Pavilion HPE h8-1360 intel
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Just purchased Samsung WQHD monitor only to discover my AMD Radeon 7570 card can't support WQHD resolution (2560X1440).

Is there a graphics card that will support the WQHD resolution and work in my 5-year-old Pavilion computer?

I have Intel core i7-3770 3.4G processor.

Hi

This is a tricky situation.

Normally you should be able to upgrade to a different graphics card. Your PC has a UEFI BIOS so newer graphics cards should work. You will have to disable Secure boot and enable Legacy boot before installing the replacement graphics card.

The problem I have seen on some of the h8-1300 series PCs is HP provides a specific list of graphics cards which can be selected at purchase.

Your PC's graphics card options are as follows:

Must select one of the following options:

  • Integrated Graphics (Intel HD 2000 Graphics or Intel HD 3000 Graphics for Sandy Bridge processors: Intel HD 2500 or Intel HD 4000 Graphics for Ivy Bridge processors)
  • GeForce GT 630 (2 GB)
  • GeForce GT 640 (3 GB)
  • Radeon HD 7570 (1 GB)
  • Radeon HD 7570 (2 GB)
  • Radeon HD 7670 (1 GB)
  • Radeon HD 7770 (2 GB)
  • Radeon HD 7950 (3 GB)

HP also provides unified graphics drivers for either AMD or Nvidia cards. Have you ever tried to update the 7570 graphics drivers at the AMD site? I could not install AMD drivers on an HP 7570 provided graphics card. Only the HP provided AMD unified drivers would install.

I was not able to install a different graphics card in some HP 1300 systems.

You may have better luck. Make sure you can return the graphics card if it fails to initialize.

Please post the HP product number for your PC. How to Find the HP Model Number and the HP Product Number or let HP automatically find your PC model number and HP network attached printers. This will allow others to review your issue, make suggestions and review your responses. This is usually the best way to get assistance.

Some of the HP HPE-13xx PC models have UEFI BIOS capabilities. So we need to know your exact product number so that we can recommend a BIOS update.  If your particular model has UEFI capabilities then most of the modern graphics cards will work in your PC subject to the wattage requirements of the graphics card and the PSU in your PC.

Hi Dave

The OP's system appears to be an h8-1360t with a UEFI BIOS.

I had tried to upgrade a 7570 on an h8-1380 system.

The 1380 (similar to the OP's 1360) also had an OEM 7570. HP provided a specific list of graphics cards that would work in the PC. The h8-1380 did not have a EFI BIOS.

HP provided unified AMD drivers for the OEM 7570. AMD provided drivers would not install manually because HP had modified the Hardware Id of the device. AMD stated there was no compatible graphics card installed in the system when using AMD's auto detect feature.

Tried to install a Legacy Nvidia 600 series card in the Legacy BIOS 1380 system. Removed the AMD graphics drivers before installing the Nvidia card.

Nothing.

Black screen, no boot. No error messages.

The system would initialize, fans would spin and LEDS would illuminate.

Reset CMOS. There were no UEFI variables to change(Legacy BIOS). Tried the Nvidia card again with no success.

Reinstall the 7570. The system would work.

A newer Nvidia or AMD card may work on the 1360t because it has an EFI BIOS.

One would have to try it (the graphics card upgrade) to see what happens. My experience shows a successful graphics card upgrade may not be guaranteed.

The Pittsburgh motherboard (H8-1380) was never issued a version 8 BIOS and it was never provisioned with an i7-3770.

However, the Formosa motherboard board was issued a version 8 BIOS. The H8-1360t has a version 8 BIOS update available dated January 2015. The initial product release date for the H8-1360t was July 2011 and didn't have an UEFI BIOS at that time.

Hi Dave

Agreed and agreed.

I noticed some similarities between the 1360 and the 1380 which raised some potential, graphics card driver update and graphics card upgrade, flags:

1. Unified Nvidia and AMD graphics drivers provided by HP,

2. AMD graphics drivers would not see the 7570 as an AMD device. An AMD graphics driver update installation would fail,

3. Could not install an, otherwise compatible, Nvidia graphics card in the 1380.

It seemed as if I was locked into only installing HP graphics drivers and specific graphics cards provided by HP.

I have never seen this behavior when updating graphics drivers or upgrading graphics cards on other HP PCs.

I have seen instances where HP has used special drivers for AMD graphics cards but not NVIDIA graphics cards.  You might come across special drivers for dual graphics situations.
