HP Pavilion Desktop 590-p0054
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello Everyone,

I wish to upgrade my current processor, which is an Intel Core i3-8100 to an Intel Core i9-9900. On my HP product specifications page, under "processor upgrade information", it lists the Intel Core i7-9700 as the most powerful CPU that is compatible with my product. The CPU I currently have (Intel Core i3-8100) and the CPU that I want to upgrade to (Intel Core i9-9900) both use the same LGA1151 socket on the motherboard. Additionally, both have very similar specifications, differing only in terms of the number of cores, threads, supported memory size/type, and speeds (the i9 is faster).

Even though the i9-9900 is not listed as compatible on my product support page, can it still be used? I understand that a BIOS update may be required to use this product or else it may not work at all. My current BIOS version is F.31 Rev.A and the most up-to-date BIOS listed on my HP product support page is BIOS version F.40 Rev.A. How do you know what CPUs are supported by the BIOS? If you follow the previous link, go to the "BIOS" section, and look at the BIOS revisions, nowhere does it list this information.

My System Information

Product: HP Pavilion Desktop 590-p0054

System BIOS: F.31 Rev.A

CPU: Intel Core i3-8100

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB DDR5

RAM: 16 GB DDR4  2666 MHz

@Dennis225,

Prior to product release, HP has tested various CPU chips, and certifies same. Then HP moves on.

There is no look-back feature.  BIOS updates do not warrant CPU compatibility.  Your on your own!
