HP-Compaq DC7600

Hi you all!

I have an upgraded dc7600 computer. Its specifications are the followings: Pentium d 945 CPU ( dual core, 3.4 Ghz, 4MB cache), 4*1GB DDR 800MHz DDR2 RAM runnig in dual channel 667Mhz and CL 5-5-5 (I can't adjust manually 😞 ). The computer has one 256GB SSD and one 500GB HDD. Both are SATA drives. And the VGA is a Radeon HD5450 1GB low profile GPU.

I think i almost maxed out this computer. 🙂

My question is: What OS will be the fastes on this computer? (Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?)

The computer is for browsing the web, and playing little games for Windows XP and Win 7 and sometimes using some office app like Word and excel.

Thanks for any answer!

                                                    Sincerely Billzzz!

Hi:

That isn't an easy question to answer, because Microsoft claims that the newer the operating system is, the 'faster and better' it is.

But when you look at things like the system requirements, XP needs the least amount of memory to run than 7,8, 8.1 or 10.  So to me the least amount of system requirements needed, the 'faster' the operating system should run.

I have run all of those operating systems, and to me the most important thing is support.

Microsoft no longer supports XP, support for Vista ends next year, 2020 for W7 and so on.

Your PC can run Windows 2000 - Windows 10 just fine, so get what you are most comfortable with.

Since the memory is maxed out at 4 GB, and you have a dedicated graphics card, IMO, you would be fine with anything you choose -- 32 or 64 bit.

I maxed out the hardware in my dc7600 CMT (which I gave away a long time ago).  I could not believe the performance increase going from the Pentium 4 630 it came with, to the Pentium D 945 I installed, as you did.

I forgot what graphics card I put in mine.  I think it was the nVidia 8400GS.

I didn't put a SSD in mine, so I bet your PC is pretty fast with one of those.
