Pavilion Elite HPE 180t
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. I am trying to find the right size fan that goes in the heatsink/cooler for the Pavilion Elite 180t. It has the Intel Core i7 920 processor. II can find the heatsink assembly, but not the fan. It fits inside the cooler in the black holder, and has a 4-pin connector. I believe it is an 80mm x 25mm, but I am not sure. I checked PartsSurfer and couldn't find the CPU cooler fan listed separately. It looks like this:

I took the fan out once before, but forgot to take the measurements. I am getting a system fan error now and my CPU cooler fan changes RPM's wildly sometimes. The hardware monitor shows it will go from 1500 RPM one minute then it will ramp quickly to 2500 to 2700 RPM's, then back down again. The case fan is really new so it's not that one. I cleaned out the machine and heatsink really well, but that didn't help.

If someone could help me, that would be appreciated.

Thanks

Nick

Greetings Nick,

Welcome back to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

Your PC was released for sale by HP in 2010. It is highly unlikely you will find any parts for sale for your PC at HP Part Surfer.

Measure the fan. Then get a static pressure fan of the same dimensions with the correct motherboard connector.

You may not have a fan problem. The CPU thermal sensor could be in trouble. This means you may have a motherboard problem.

Or you could have a run away process consuming excess CPU cycles. Have you checked Task Manager for this?

Maybe it is time to reapply CPU thermal paste.

Regards

Hello and thank you for responding. I ran my hardware manager (not task manager in Windows) and it didn't look like anything was running in excess. I also checked cpu temps and they stayed really consistent around 50-55C. It's a 920, so it's a 130W part and can run warm. I knew I wasn't going to find a new one for sale from HP, I was looking to see if I could find a part #. I didn't measure it last time I took it out and don't want to pull it again until I replace the fan. Is there any diagnostic test i can do to see if the thermal sensor is going bad?

Thanks

Hi Nick,

You're very welcome.

I am not aware of any HP diagnostics to check motherboard thermal sensor function.

You could try resetting the BIOS to defaults.

Or try pulling the CR2032 motherboard battery. Let the PC sit for about 20 minutes.

This suggestion will reset CMOS.

Hi Nick,

I did not mention checking for a BIOS update due to the age of your PC.

But this is an option.

Thank you for responding. If the issue isn't resolved with a fan swap and new thermal paste, then I will change the cmos battery. I don't want to change the bios. I atill don't know what fan size it is, so I will order the size I think it is based on what I remember of the dimensions. I think it's 80mmx25mm. If you have solid information please let me know. Thanks in advance.
