OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 880-181nf
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

I have a Omen 880-181 nf,. I am underway to give this machine more performance for MSFS  2020/2024.

This machine has a Motherboard Tampa 2 with a Bios MS-7A61 Ver 1.3 dated oct 2022.   The CPU is a Intel I 8700 K @3.7 / 4.7 GHz.

So, i will upgrade with:

- PSU Corsair RM 850x (ver 2024)

- 4 X Crucial Pro 16GB DDR4-3200 UDIMM=> 64 GB

Hope that the above pieces will work smoothly in my machine. What would be the most performant graphic card NVIDIA ' series 3000 or 4000,  RTX xxxx?

Thanks for your comments

@Hundel,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

If you know what I mean, "the best performing graphics card" depends on your budget.

In terms of performance, you wouldn't go wrong with, for example, the Asus TUF RTX 4070 Ti GAMING OC 12GB.

Let me know what your budget is and I can help you further.

As with all GPU upgrades, check its dimensions (LxWxH) for fit inside your case.

Btw, considering that your rig has the Intel Z370 chipset, any 9th gen Intel Core processor should also be compatible, but I digress.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for your reply.

Well, budget is not a bottleneck.

I prefer not to change the processor (I never did it....) . So I would say that the motherboard  (Tampa 2, MS-7A61 Ver 1.3 ) with an upgraded Bios to ver AMI F.56 dated oct 2022 would be somewhere a bottleneck for the GC.

I will upgrade the original PSU( 500W)  by a 850 W PSU from Corsair (RM850x).  I will upgrade the RAM from 16GB to 64 GB with 4x16GB Crucial DDR4 @3200 MHz CL22.

Actually I have a GTX 1080  ( Dimension 27.9x4.2x14) I would say that ma length should be around 30 cm

Now I would like to know what would be the best performant GPU ( NVIDIA ) for this machine.

Thanks for for comments, advice

take care

@Hundel,

Size, then, will be the limiting factor.

I would go with the Asus ProArt RTX 4080 Super OC 16GBhttps://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/asus-proart-rtx-4080-super-oc.b11622:

For dimension reasons I guess I will take the Asus Prime RTX 4070 12 GB OC. This card needs 2.5 slots and has a length of 267 mm.

Hope that I will not regret my choice.

Thanks for help

@Hundel,

That is an outstanding GPU choice, and a 'hugely' graphics performance improvement over your legacy GTX 1080: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-4070-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1080/4148vs3603.

If you don't mind, please follow up to tell us how things went.

Hi

I did all these upgrades in my Omen 880-182 nf:

- PSU Corsair RM850x with the cable set Gen 5 Type4

- Asus Prime RTX4070 OC 10 GB

- Upgrade Ram to 64 Go with crucial 3200 MHz => the motherboard downgraded this to 2600 MHz

Upgrade of air flow with two Noctua NF-AF 12x25 Chromax Black Swap

It took about 1.5 days to do this upgrade with a sever cleaning. The most difficult part was the cable management. During start up don't worry, there was a message to indicate a reset of the Bios. This took around 5 minutes in front of a blue screen... After new reboot everything was OK.

The fans are very very silent, even at full RPM's. I tried first my favorite dame, the MSFS 2020.  Amazing nearly all parameters are at ultra or high. The DLSS features from NVIDIA are very helpful. With this I got +/- 60 fps. With the OEM GTX 1080 I was at a lower configuration @ 20-25 fps.

Hope this info will helpful if you want to do an upgrade of your Omen machine

take care
