@Kana33,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

You have chosen a very nice upgradeable SFF platform!

Was one of my upgrade projects: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Upgrading-HP-Elite....

I would upgrade your HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF in this order:

1.) Upgrade to 2x16GB of DDR4 PC4-19200, 2400 MHz, Non-ECC, UDIMM, Dual-Rank, 288-pin RAM kit, such as this affordable/quality purchase option: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Upgrading-HP-Elite....

2.) Upgrade to either an i7-7700 (not the "T" version!) or i7-7700K (not the "CONFIDENTIAL" version!).

You can purchase an i7-7700 for around $64 (or less), such as this purchase option via a trusted eBay Seller: https://www.ebay.com/itm/326377122011?_skw=i7-7700&epid=4045596692&itmmeta=01JGSPSTF11J5G3GF1E236QMF....

An i7-7700K can be purchased for around $83 (or less), such as this purchase option via a trusted eBay Seller: https://www.ebay.com/itm/313039547779?_skw=i7-7700k&itmmeta=01JGSQ13Q5CBH8XX5SX6X9S6G4&hash=item48e2....

3.) Upgrade from a budget SATA SSD to an M.2 NVMe SSD, such as this affordable/quality 1TB Crucial P3 Plushttps://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Plus-PCIe-NAND-5000MB/dp/B0B25NXWC7/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1L9ALFGMGK2JA&dib....

4.) Upgrading your graphics card -that depends on your budget, to be discussed later.  Btw, what is the wattage of your power supply?

Hi there, first of all, thank you so much for replying to me, about the power supply, I don't know yet. I've texted the guy and is awaiting a reply, then I'll do a follow up when he replys. Also, ill be getting this tomorrow.

About the CPU, i was thinking if the G5 motherboard is able to fit in this G3 cause I'm planning to upgrade to a 9th gen i7. If I was to do this, do I need to install any heatsink and upgrade the power supply. About the other upgrades I'm happy to follow your suggestion. Thanks in advance!

@Kana33,

Yes, upgrading your G3 to a G5 SFF platform is very rewarding too as I showed with my HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF upgrade project: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Upgrading-HP-EliteDesk-800-G5-S....

I would strongly recommend that you upgrade your CPU heatsink/cooling fan combo to this 95-watt TDP rated cooler with p/n: L04397-001.  You can purchase one of these (and believe me, they are often difficult to come by!) via this eBay Seller at the moment: https://www.ebay.com/itm/235663175353?_skw=HP+L04397-001&itmmeta=01JGWVKAM3KQHMQKR1NPNYMGFV&hash=ite...:

Hi there, thanks for giving me the fan upgrade, really appreciate it. I have found a G5 sff, ram, cpu, HDD gutted out but the motherboard, PSU, fan and other things are still intact, all for 40sgd. Would it be better for me just to purchase this instead of purchasing each part separately, and is the G5 motherboard compatible with any AMD Ryzen CPU? If not I'll just go with the i9 9900k. And is the motherboard ddr4 or DDR5 and what's the max speed as well as any pieces you recommend me to upgrade with. With that said, I would also look into upgrading my GPU to AMD as it has better value to performance, so I'll appreciate if you'll have any recommendations. Thanks in advance!

@Kana33,

Sorry, please translate "40sgd" for me!

The 800 G5 motherboard is only compatible with 8th and 9th Intel Core processors.

The fastest any (DDR4) RAM will ever run on an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF is 2667 MHz. Most people use DDR4 PC4-25600, 3200 MHz, Non-ECC, UDIMM, 288-pin RAM, which will down-throttle aka "bridge" to 2667 MHz.

In my professional opinion (you'll thank me later) you should forget about AMD graphics cards. Please, trust me on this. When it comes to graphics cards and your SFF, you can do all kinds of off-the-Reservation stuff, like I pursued with my EliteDesk 800 G3/4/5 upgrade projects (external secondary power supply + external graphics card setup).

If high 1080P preset gaming is what you are aiming for, upgrade your power supply to either a 400-watt or 500-watt power supply, and go for a low-profile RTX 4060 which will actually fit inside your case -requires a little bit of case modding, but nothing that would be too difficult to do.

Hi, first of all 40 Singapore dollars would be 30 USD. Seoncd why should I stay away from amd gpu, are they not that good? Also could you let me see what modding do I have to do. Thanks in advance!

@Kana33,

There are very few hard-core gamers who would choose an AMD card.  Seriously.  For example, in my circle of gaming acquaintances, no one does.  Almost exclusively it is RTX 4090, RTX 4080 Super (yours truly), RTX 3090 Ti, etc.  Even if they were given, say an RX 7900 XTX, they and I would be very reluctant to play with AMD cards.

Why, you ask? Besides this former AMD card owner's heart-felt rant: https://community.amd.com/t5/pc-drivers-software/why-i-will-never-buy-an-amd-card-again/m-p/460145, here are my reasons:

1. Driver Issues (Historically)

  • AMD: AMD drivers still lack the versatility and stability compared with Nvidia drivers.  To this very day.
  • Nvidia: Nvidia’s drivers are more polished, with frequent updates and quicker support for new games.

2. Ray Tracing Performance

  • AMD: Their GPUs lag behind Nvidia in ray tracing performance due to fewer dedicated RT (Ray Tracing) cores and a less mature implementation. This is noticeable in games that heavily rely on ray tracing.
  • Nvidia: Dominates ray tracing thanks to its advanced hardware (RT cores) and mature software ecosystem (DLSS for performance boosts).

3. AI Upscaling (DLSS vs. FSR)

  • AMD: FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is an open-source solution but less effective than Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). FSR lacks the AI-enhanced image reconstruction of DLSS, leading to less sharp and detailed visuals in some scenarios.
  • Nvidia: DLSS, powered by Tensor cores, provides superior image quality and performance, particularly in demanding games.

4. Software Ecosystem and Features

  • AMD: While improving, AMD’s software suite has fewer proprietary features and tools compared to Nvidia. Some features like AMD Link (for game streaming) are less widely adopted.
  • Nvidia: Offers an extensive ecosystem with features like GeForce Experience (game optimization, automatic driver updates), Nvidia Reflex (latency reduction), and NVENC (superior video encoding for streaming).

5. Market Leadership and Optimization

  • AMD: Game developers often prioritize Nvidia GPUs due to their larger market share, leading to better optimization for Nvidia hardware in games. AMD GPUs experience occasional game compatibility or performance quirks.
  • Nvidia: Dominates the high-end GPU market, meaning many AAA games are designed with Nvidia GPUs in mind.

6. Hardware Efficiency and Cooling

  • AMD: AMD GPUs often consume more power and run hotter than equivalent Nvidia cards, leading to potentially noisier cooling solutions.
  • Nvidia: Generally offers better power efficiency and cooler, quieter cards, especially with their high-end models.

7. Resale Value

  • AMD: Nvidia GPUs tend to depreciate in value quicker than Nvidia cards.
  • Nvidia: Their stronger brand and broader user base result in higher resale prices.

8. Content Creation Performance

  • AMD: While gaming performance may be competitive, AMD GPUs lag in professional workloads like 3D rendering, AI training, and video editing.
  • Nvidia: Offers superior performance in these areas, supported by CUDA cores and extensive software integration.

9. Proprietary Technologies

  • AMD: Lacks some proprietary Nvidia techs like G-SYNC (adaptive sync), DLSS, and NVLink (multi-GPU configurations).
  • Nvidia: G-SYNC monitors and Nvidia’s proprietary techs often provide a smoother experience.

10. Availability of High-End Models

  • AMD: Historically, AMD has struggled to compete with Nvidia in the ultra-high-end market, such as the RTX 4090 tier.
  • Nvidia: Leads with the most powerful GPUs for enthusiasts, regardless of price.

Modding: please see this YouTube video where you'll see that a small section of the drives bay will have to be removed:

Alright then, I have found a gtx 1650 low profile for 238 and a RTx 3060 low profile for 278, which one should I get and do I need to upgrade the Psu

HP Recommended

@Kana33,

There are no low-profile RTX 3060 cards as far as I know. Do you mean a low-profile RTX 3050, like this one: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/msi-rtx-3050-low-profile-6-gb.b11696?

If so, the 250-watt power supply with p/n: L08417-004 would suffice to power this card.

If you can afford it, I would recommend a low-profile RTX 4060 which can be powered by either a 400-watt power supply with p/n: 942332-001 or by a 500-watt power supply with p/n: L77487-003.

Hope this was helpful.
