I am planning to upgrade my HP Victus 15l to have an rx 7600, but am unsure of what other things I should do to modify the computer so that it can optimize that gpu as best it can. I am reading that I may have to upgrade my psu as well. Any advice?

Welcome to our HP community forum!

Your 500-watt power supply (please verify!) is probably capable to power an RX 7600 (TDP: 165-watt), but you would be pushing it.

Not to snub AMD graphics cards per se, but you would be better off with an RTX 4060 which has a much lower TDP (115-watt) and performs better than an RX 7600. Some RTX 4060 cards are priced really well right now, such as this purchase example via Amazon [EDIT:] Amazon.com: MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 4060 8GB GDRR6 Extreme Clock: 2505 MHz 128-Bit HDMI/DP Nvlink TOR....

Thank you for the advice! I definitely will get the RTX 4060 then. Just two questions: do you think it would fit into the HP Victus 15l chassis, and do I need to open the computer to verify my power supply?

@Tishy__,

Like I requested in my previous response, please verify the wattage of your power supply, which is likely a 500-watt power supply.

And yes, the smaller-sized (two fan) MSI RTX 4060 model will fit in your chassis.

My bad: the Amazon link I provided inadvertently showed the MSI RTX 3060 (fixed) -it should be the MSI RTX 4060Amazon.com: MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 4060 8GB GDRR6 Extreme Clock: 2505 MHz 128-Bit HDMI/DP Nvlink TOR....

No worries! I appreciate the help. Unfortunately, I have a 350w power supply, so I will be needing to upgrade that as well.

@Tishy__,

Does your 350-watt power supply have part number: M49611-001?

The 500-watt power supply upgrade for your HP Victus 15L has part number: L89233-001, which you can purchase online, such as via an eBay Seller starting at $65: Hp L89233-001 for sale | eBay.

Theoretically -at least according to TechPowerUp, a 350-watt power supply should be able to power an RTX 4060.

My mistake, I do have a 500w psu, but the part number is L77487-003. I'm not sure if it means anything, but the model of my HP Victus is the TG02, with an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G cpu. I think that I should be all set to just buy the 4060 and install it then? Truly appreciate all the help.

Yea, I can only rely on HP's published part numbers, and I'm not surprised that HP at times deviates from that.

Anyway, I am happy that you got a 500-watt power supply! And yes, you can simply swap graphics cards. Since there is time before you got the RTX 4060, will follow up later today or tomorrow what you should do to make this GPU transition as painless and smooth as possible.

@Tishy__,

So, just before you install your new RTX 4060, please do the following:

1.) Download the RTX 4060 driver from here -don't install it yet: https://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownloads/confirmation.php?url=/Windows/555.85/555.85-desktop-w...: click on "Download", and then on "Download" again. This will download your new RTX 4060 driver.

2.) ONLY IF* you got a graphics card installed, download and run the freeware "DDU" ("Display Driver Uninstaller") program in order to remove your previous graphics card driver. Don't worry, your PC will continue to work/display video. You can download DDU from here: https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/: click on the "Download Mirror (USA)", and the zipped "[Guru3D.com]-DDU.zip" file will automatically download. Open File Explorer and click on Downloads, then right-click on the aforementioned file, and select "Extract All...", then click on "Extract", and the unzipped file will appear in your download folder.

* What graphics card, if any, do you have?

Double-click on the unzipped file, then right-click on the "DDU v18.0.7.6" file (or newer version if offered) and select "Run as administrator". It will ask for your permission: click on "Yes", and then on "Extract". Then look for the file "Display Driver Uninstaller", right-click on it, and then choose: "Run as administrator". Answer the questions -don't run in "Safe Mode", choose the default "Options" screen, click on "Close", from the "---Select device type---" choose "GPU", then from the drop-down menu just below it choose either "AMD" or "Nvidia", depending what graphics card you currently have installed in your PC. Then choose the "Clean and restart" option.

Here is a YouTube instructional video on how to use DDU (just skip to timestamp: 3:35 because the extra step to run your PC in Safe mode is unnecessary, and it makes this process only more complicated) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn8z39tiEL0.

3.) Once DDU has done its job and has restarted your PC, power it down, remove from power, press your power button for four seconds in order to release any residual power, open up your PC, remove your old graphics card, and snap in your new RTX 4060.  Make sure that you connect an 8-pin PCIe power cable to your card.

Closeup your PC, reconnect to power, and power it on.  Once booted up, go to your Download file, and right-click on the RTX 4060 driver (named something like: "555.85-desktop-win10-win11. . ."), and choose "Run as administrator".  When prompted, only choose the "Game Ready Driver".  The actual RTX 4060 driver installation will take a few minutes, your screen may flicker once in a while, and your PC may (or may not) restart once or twice.

This should be it.

Any questions along the way, feel free to ask.

Kind Regards,

NonSequitur777

If you're having trouble uninstalling, removing or deleting your old video card drivers or having trouble installing drivers for a new graphics card? Then DDU may be able to help. This video is a step by step tutorial showing where to download Display Driver Uninstaller, how to install it to your
