I tried to order more ram locally but was told it was incompatible. That it had to come from HP. Where do I go to get more ram?

@TomB69 , welcome to the Community.

HP doesn't sell memory.  I suggest that you try Crucial Memory.  Not only is their memory guaranteed to work if they recommend it, but there app will tell you if your computer can be upgraded.

I have the same problem and am currently trying to get HP to sort it out. I believe it is a Bios problem. As long as you get the same spec ram it should not matter which brand you purchase. Most RAM chips are made by three companies only and manufacturers/assembly put them on their boards.

You are absolutely correct about the manufacturers of memory.  However, HP has their motherboards made to their specifications and are not necessarily the same as retail motherboards.  This is why their may a problem with some of the memory; especially if it is high-end gaming memory.

Hi Old_Geekster. I did suspect that HP may get a special motherboard made but I would have thought that the memory spec should be okay. It is supposed to be DDR5 4800 SODIMM so all the same spec memory should work but who knows? Hopefully, HP will come up with a Bios fix that will allow it.

HP normally doesn't update their BIOS's for changes for upgrades.  This would not be manageable with all of the computers they sell annually.

Yes, I did wonder about that. I checked in the Bios, and it is an AMI Bios so maybe they could make an adjustment. Maybe the problem is not in the Bios but somewhere else like the Intel chipset.
