After installing a Samsung 960 Pro 512GB drive in the M.2 slot, the machine won't boot. This is not a big surprise, but the problem is that I can't get to the setup or startup menus either. It just sits at the initial POST screen where the processor and memory info are displayed. There are no beeps. The F keys show the various option titles and the bottom of the screen. For example, pushing F10 shows the Setup option at the bottom. However, you can't actually go into the Setup menu - nothing happens. Rebooting or Ctl-Alt-Del returns you to the same spot.

 

This machine has an  i7 7700K processor running at 4.2 GHz and latest BIOS/UEFI AMI  F.11

 

It is also possible that this drive is compatible but defective, so I'm trying to determine compatibility.

 

Has anyone successfully installed this drive into this (or very similar) PC?

 

Please reply back if you have installed an M.2 in the 870-200 desktop series, and which drive you used. Thanks!

Thanks for both replies on this. I had tried updating the BIOS, putting back original drives, etc. I also talked to HP Support, who said that the PC should boot up with the new drive, and it was a known compatible model. So, I decided to return it and swap it, on the chance it might be defective.

 

The new replacement worked perfectly. I was able to boot up normally and then change the boot device and order, and install Windows 10 onto it as a fresh install (did not want to transfer the original image anyway).

I understand you are having issues after installing the SSD on your HP Omen Desktop. Don't worry we'll work together to find a solution for you.

 

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Do you have the original hard drive that came with the PC? Have you tried to connect the Old hard drive and check if the PC boots?

Do you have a Wireless keyboard and mouse? Or Is it a USB keyboard and mouse

Have you tried to update the Bios?

 

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

 

Perform a Hard reset on the PC

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:

  1. If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.

    If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.

  2. With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.

  3. With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.

  4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to check the keyboard and mouse. If you have a Wireless keyboard and mouse, I would suggest you try to connect a Wired USB keyboard and mouse and check if that helps.

 

If the issue persists, I would suggest you try to connect the original hard drive back on the computer and test if it works.

Hi,

 

Try the following:

 

  1. Remove the Samsung NVMe m.2 SSD from the system board.
  2. Boot up.
  3. Install the latest UEFI diagnostics 6.4.1.0 Rev.A
  4. Power off/on and tap F2 ----> this should bring up the diagnostics
  5. Run a full set -- If your PC passes the diagnostics then power off.
  6. Install the Samsung NVMe m.2 SSD.
  7. Power on the PC and tap F2. ----> this should bring up the diagnostics
  8. Run a full set of the diagnostics. Post your results.
