Will An Optical Mouse Ruin a Wood Desk's Surface?

Hi.  I have a wood desk that my HP desktop is on, do I need a mousepad for the optical mouse?  Overtime will the HP optical mouse ruin the surface of the desk?  Thanks, Craig.
