HP ENVY Desktop - 795-0011na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am unable to install Windows Update KB4528760 despite several attempts over the last 10 days (at least).     Each time it appears to install to 100% then reports Error 0x800f0831.

I have run the appropriate fixes and diagnostics and exhausted all the suggestions by the HP Virtual Agent.   None of those solved the error.   I have only one Restore Point (dated 31 January - earlier ones seem to have disappeared) so cannot go back and attempt to clear the failure by that recovery means.

Please can someone help?

@Brian_A,

while I have faith in your actions, sometimes MS leaps into the fray with a suggestion.

Be sure to temporarily turn off any Anti Virus software.

Thank you Wb2001 but sadly your suggestion of installing the update from the MS Update Catalog failed too. So I am no further forwards.

Is there something else that can be tried please?

I have similar issues, KB4528760 seems to install ok - all the onscreen prompts are as expected, but on the reboot the PC gets stuck at the spinning dots screen every time. The only way of recovering the machine is to force recovery console and use a system restore point. Without that restore point, I'd be looking at reinstall Windows.

I've repeated this exercise multiple times now, and am 100% confident the same thing would happen if I tried again. I have ZoneAlarm & Avast-free running, have seen a few posts suggesting that stopping these could be a solution and haven't tried it. But to be honest, that screams of buggy patches that I'm not minded to bother with.
