Hi, I've just updated to the latest bios for my desktop and then upgraded the cpu from the i5 that came with it  to the Intel Core i7-6700 (Skylake) 3.4 GHz Quad Core. TDP 65W.

The product documentation states this is fully supported. However after the upgrade Windows does not boot. I can get into bios ok and run all the diagnostics etc. etc. and everything is OK with it reporting the new cpu.

I've tried restoring bios to default settings and also removing the cmos battery for 30 mins (tho' neither of these lost the system time) and windows still will not start.

If I replace the i5 cpu then windows starts ok. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks...

Greetings @Delbot

Welcome to the HP Forum.

This is a super weird symptom. Windows should run if the BIOS sees the new CPU.

Any on screen POST error messages at system startup when using the 6700 with a stable Windows installation?

Does the BIOS see the system disk in the "Storage" menu? Is the boot disk set to AHCI? Try staring the PC using only the system disk.

I don't know; have never seen this behavior before.

@Bill_To,

Perhaps the OP would like to tell us what model desktop is referred to.

For example, some 35-watt USDT's don't do well when a 65-watt processor is installed.

Meaning, if the OP has an USDT, an i7-6700T (35-watt TDP) would be a preferred processor.

Kind Regards,

I concur.

Good point.

The socket works but the system board can't deliver required power.

But it is confusing to see a successful POST in this situation.

This symptom does not compute.

Apologies. 1st time in community and did so from logging into my account that said what my.pc was so thought it would be shown.

I have a

OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-165na and purchased a

Intel Core i7-6700 (Skylake) 3.4 GHz Quad Core. TDP 65W to replace the i5 processor.

Thanks.

It appears the 6700 is active since you can access the BIOS when this processor is installed in the MB.

I have no idea why you cannot run Windows if the Windows system drive is present when checking the Storage Menu in the BIOS.

Again, it might be a RAID vs AHCI issue. Otherwise, I don't know what is going on??

I have upgraded many CPUs over the years and have never experienced what you are experiencing.

@Delbot,

An OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-165na as fitted with the Odense2-S motherboard (SSID: 828A) is a very nice and upgradeable PC platform, and an i7-6700 is most definitely compatible.

Personally, I would get an i7-6700K, which is also compatible with your rig, and would provide just a little extra juice to your gaming experience -but I digress.

Inspect your i7-6700 very carefully, making sure that both the business end of the processor as well as your CPU slot is free of debris/dirt (use compressed aka canned air), and that there are no bent pins.  Clean your CPU with a Q-tip dipped in 99+% isopropanol alcohol.

Prior to trying the cpu upgrade I updated the bios to the latest available on the hp support site for my desktop, vF.45 05/22/2019.

However, I did not update any other drivers, eg. Chipset, believing windows 10 would have updated those over time. So perhaps if I update all drivers possible, including chipset, and try replacing the cpu again windows may boot?

Does this sound feasible?

What screen activity do you see when you try to run W10 using the 6700? The 6700 seems to be functional since you can access the BIOS.

I would guess your PC's W10 installation has the latest drivers provided by Microsoft. The drivers provided by HP would, most likely, be older. I can't say if installing different drivers would help.

Per @NonSequitur777's link your PC has a 256 GB, 2.5 inch, SATA SSD that will run Windows when you install the factory CPU.

This is what I would try. But I repair and build PCs so I have all kinds of replacement components. You'll need a second PC to do the following:

Install the 6700 in the 870.

Then replace the 870's existing 2.5 inch SATA SSD with a different 2.5 inch SATA SSD or use a second, different 3.5 inch platter HDD (don't use the existing 3.5 inch platter HDD - you will overwrite all data on this drive).

Verify the 870's BIOS (Storage Menu) is set to AHCI.

Now, download the W10 Media Creation Tool on a different PC from this Site to create new USB W10 installation media.

Try to do a clean W10 installation on the replacement storage device you installed in the 870.

Getting this done would, at least, verify the 6700 works.

I have no idea why a stable W10 install won't boot using a compatible CPU if the CPU is good to go.
