I've tried a diferent approach. I upgraded to Windows 11 (registry hack to bypass fact that i5 cpu wasn't supported). This all went well, activated, did all available updates so decided to have another go at replacing the cpu (i7, 6700). Once again cpu recognised ok in bios and all tests passed...but will once again will not boot into windows. Just don't understand what's going on?

Greetings @Delbot

Sorry to see another fail when using the 6700.

I can only guess the CPU has some type weird problem. Which is really strange since the BIOS sees the CPU but your Windows installation can't run when the 6700 is installed in the MB.

This is a very unusual symptom. Generally, either a CPU works or it doesn't.

I have never seen this type of selective behavior when upgrading a CPU. Windows should run if the PC can POST.

Make W10 or W11 USB installation media suggested in my previous response. See if you can just Boot to the USB stick.

Regards

Thanks. I've put the i5 back in for now so my son can use the pc when he gets home. I'll try again tomorrow with a bootable usb.

Here's some screen shots showing pc seems happy with i7...
